India's Miss Grand International 2024, Rachel Gupta, Stripped of Title in Controversial Move

Dubai - Rachel Gupta, the first Indian woman to be crowned Miss Grand International, has been dethroned amidst accusations of failing to fulfill duties and breaching her contract, according to the Miss Grand International Organization. Gupta, however, maintains that she voluntarily relinquished the crown due to a toxic environment and broken promises.

In a surprising turn of events, the organization announced Gupta's removal from her position today, citing her involvement in external projects without prior approval and her refusal to attend a scheduled trip to Guatemala as the reasons.

However, sharing her side of the story on social media, Gupta claimed that she stepped down due to "broken promises, mistreatment, and a toxic environment." In her Instagram post, she alleged that she was subjected to body shaming comments, forced to live in cramped conditions, and exploited to sell products on TikTok.

At the time of writing, the organization has yet to respond to Gupta's claims. Her dethronement has sparked a wave of reactions and support from her followers, with some expressing their outrage at the organization's alleged mistreatment of the winner.

Following Gupta's removal, Christine Juliane Opiaza of the Philippines is expected to be crowned the new Miss Grand International 2024, as per GMA News Online.

Meanwhile, former Miss India, Miss Universe runner-up, UN Goodwill Ambassador, and former Dubai resident Celina Jaitly has stepped forward to defend beauty pageants from criticism. Jaitly, who represented India at the Miss Universe pageant in Puerto Rico, emphasized the need for grace, gratitude, and professionalism in participating in such events.

Jaitly addressed the recent controversy surrounding Miss England 2025 Milla Magee's criticism of the Miss World India event, in which she alleged exploitative sponsor engagements and heavy dress expectations. Jaitly argued that such events were not HR seminars but beauty pageants, and dressing appropriately for sponsor events was standard practice.

She concluded by reminding readers of the immense economic and cultural significance of the global beauty and fashion industries, asserting that these industries had been powerful engines of change and opportunity for many women around the world, including herself.

In a poignant closing statement, Jaitly declared, "The truth must matter."
