From rock bottom to cup final winners, Rot-Weiss Essen has had a season like no other. Full of drama, upsets, and unexpected twists, the third-division team has captured the hearts of fans across the Ruhr region, proving that football is anything but predictable.

After the disappointment of a 0:2 loss to Alemannia Aachen on January 19, Koach Uwe Koschinat and his team found themselves in the midst of a crisis. The promoted team slipped to 19th place, just six points above the relegation zone, threatening to plummet back to the obscurity of the Regionalliga West.

As the fans looked on, anger and fear gripped the team and the Hafenstraße. With Koschinat in charge for just three games, some questioned his decision to take the helm at this tumultuous club. But what the spectators didn't know was that a drastic transformation was about to take place.

A New Chapter Begins

Fast forward to the end of the season, and Rot-Weiss Essen had defied all odds to storm up the league table, narrowly missing out on a playoff spot. After five spectacular wins in six games, they secured their spot in the DFB Cup, the country's premier cup competition, setting their sights on a historic return to the 2. Bundesliga.

It all began with a change in approach. Koschinat sharpened his gaze, recognizing that some players were not up to the pressure of playing for RWE. He aimed to instill a defensive mindset, focusing on stability and risk reduction, in stark contrast to their possession-focused style of play earlier in the season.

Key to this new philosophy was the arrival of Klaus Gjasula, a mental monster and fighter who was born in Tirana, Albania. This hard-nosed midfielder, with his record 17 yellow cards in just 27 games in the 1. Bundesliga, quickly became a fan favorite, providing much-needed leadership and providing the anchor the team desperately needed.

A Surprising Rise to the Top

As RWE continued to improve, Koschinat and his team focused on key areas for improvement. They identified the need for a powerful striker and another robust central player to relieve the pressure on Gjasula, with young star Tom Moustier evolving into a strategic force alongside him.

Their hard work paid off, as they overtook rivals MSV Duisburg to finish the season in eighth place, a remarkable turnaround from their lowly position just a few months earlier. It seemed that the Koschinat way had finally paid off, much to the delight of the passionate Essener supporters.

But as the team enjoyed their flourishing success, they knew that they must remain humble and continue to work hard to avoid being sucked back into the chaos that threatened to consume them just months before.

  1. In striving to maintain their success and avoid a potential relegation, Rot-Weiss Essen's 'community policy' and 'employment policy' seem to prioritize stability and focus, as they continue to focus on key areas for improvement, such as the addition of a powerful striker and another robust central player.
  2. As Rot-Weiss Essen ascended the ranks, their journey towards the DFB Cup was reminiscent of the unpredictable nature of European leagues, including the Champions League, as they demonstrated sportsmanship and determination, much like that displayed by successful football teams across the continent.
