Students from Puerto Rico Send Support to Military Personnel
Students from three schools in northern Puerto Rico have sent handmade Christmas cards to military personnel serving abroad. The initiative, led by educator Lisa Morales, aimed to bring seasonal comfort to troops stationed far from home. The cards were part of a wider effort to support service members during the holidays.
The project was organised under the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), which encourages youth development and community involvement. Morales, an educator at the University of Puerto Rico, coordinated the effort with students from three local schools. Each card carried personal messages of gratitude and encouragement for the troops’ service.
The completed cards were handed over to the United States Marine Corps Reserve at Fort Buchanan. 1st Sgt. Alex Figueroa of the Marine Corps Reserve unit noted that such gestures play a vital role in lifting troop morale. Many of the recipients are among the hundreds of Puerto Rican service members deployed globally, particularly in the Caribbean under the U.S. Southern Command. Fort Buchanan serves as a key military installation, supporting readiness and deployments with an annual budget exceeding $500 million. The base acts as a strategic hub for operations across the region, reinforcing the importance of community support for stationed personnel.
The students’ handmade cards reached troops just in time for the holiday season. Their messages provided a personal touch, reminding service members of the appreciation from their home island. The initiative also highlighted the ongoing connection between local communities and deployed military personnel.
