Title Triumphs for SC Magdeburg in Handball Champions League
Student's flawless final performance in Germany
Cologne (dpa) - SC Magdeburg is one step closer to claiming their third victory in the Handball Champions League - a feat last achieved in 2002 and 2023. The league runners-up secured the second semi-final against record champions and defending champions FC Barcelona with a nail-biting 31:30 (18:18) victory at the Final Four in Cologne, setting up a thrilling German finale against Berlin's Füchse on Sunday at 6:00 PM. In the first semi-final, the capital club outplayed French side HBC Nantes with a commanding 34:24 scoreline.
Gisli Kristjansson, Magdeburg's star right back, made a triumphant return following a two-week shoulder injury, scoring crucial goals against the Spanish serial champions in the heated contest, where the referee issued three red cards during the intense match. Despite trailing in the first half, with the score at 12:16 (23 minutes), Coach Bennet Wiegert's team demonstrated resilience in characteristic fashion.
In emulation of their semi-final two years ago, which Magdeburg won on penalties against Barça, the game remained incredibly tight. Just before half-time, the Icelandic star player Omar Ingi Magnusson, who scored an impressive 11 goals, equalized for SCM.
Magdeburg overcame a three-goal deficit after the break and finally took the lead for the first time at 25:24 with 14 minutes remaining. In the tense finish, SCM displayed fantastic composure to seal the triumph with a late goal from Tim Hornke.
