Student from a Queens high school detained following accusations of possessing a firearm and threatening to instigate a shooting at the school

In a shocking turn of events, a high school student in Queens was arrested for allegedly threatening to open fire at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School.

The incident unfolded on Tuesday morning when the alleged threat was posted on social media at 10:17 a.m. The post contained a threat to 'shoot the school up'. The NYPD was swiftly notified, and the FBI contacted the NYPD about the post at 11:33 a.m.

Mayor Eric Adams, expressing concern about a 16-year-old having a semiautomatic weapon and threatening to take the lives of other students, stated that this is coming from somewhere, and the need to recommit ourselves to saving these children. He further emphasized the importance of vigilance and reporting threats, stating that this incident is an example of the law enforcement apparatus at the federal and local levels doing everything right.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch provided more details about the incident. She revealed that the student's phone rang when police contacted the number associated with the Instagram account. The black, semiautomatic handgun recovered from the student was a 9mm Taurus GX4, loaded with 13 rounds in the magazine. The NYPD was on the scene at the school by 11:45 a.m., and the student was arrested and quickly removed from class without incident.

Police searched the student's belongings with the consent of one of his parents. The Cardozo High School is not a scanning school, and there have been no gun-related offenses reported there in the past year.

The arrest has left the school community shaken. Student Milan White expressed concern about the school not being a scanning school, stating that it never really happens for them to be a no-scan school, and the possibility of a school shooting. Fellow student Cyrus Cordero expressed feelings of surprise, shock, and fear, stating that students should learn in a safe environment without worrying about being shot.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, as a mother of two young school-age boys, expressed her feelings, stating she is shaken but resolute in ensuring the NYPD does everything in their power to keep children safe.
