Peter Weck Celebrates 95 Years of a Remarkable Career

Peter Weck, a beloved figure in both film and television productions, recently celebrated his 95th birthday. With a career spanning over seven decades, Weck has amassed an impressive portfolio of around 150 roles.

Weck began his journey in Vienna, where he studied acting and made his film debut in 1954. His breakthrough came with roles in classics like the Sissi trilogy (1955). Since then, he has graced the screens of Austria and Germany with his versatile performances.

One of Weck's most notable roles was in the TV series Ich heirate eine Familie (1983–1986), where he starred alongside Thekla Carola Wied, who played the second lead. Despite the media's attention on their friendship, there is no documented evidence of a personal relationship between the two.

Weck's influence extends beyond acting. As an intendant, he significantly contributed to the Austrian musical theater scene. He managed the Theater an der Wien from 1983, introducing major productions such as Cats, A Chorus Line, Les Miserables, and Phantom of the Opera. His leadership helped establish Vereinigte Bühnen Wien (VBW), which became a powerhouse in Austrian musical theater.

Weck's role as a director also saw him active in the industry since the 1950s, with many TV shows under his belt. His career has been marked by his roles as the "scheming 'rascal type'". Despite the numerous roles, Weck sometimes forgets his own identity, such is the depth of his immersion into his characters.

Weck brought the successful musical "Cats" to the German-language stage in Vienna for the first time, sparking a boom in the musical scene with his work. He has been active on big theater stages in Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, Hamburg, and Berlin. Weck was still performing on stage until a few years ago.

Despite his age, Weck remains grateful for his life and career. However, he suffered a stroke in 2022 and is now dependent on a wheelchair and care. Despite these challenges, Weck's spirit remains undeterred, as he continues to express his enduring curiosity and commitment to his craft.
