Struggling to recover February schedule without heavyweight championship fight in UFC plans
The sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) is set to light up the month of February with a series of exciting events, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Bellator MMA announce their lineups for the upcoming weeks.
In the most anticipated fight of the month, the welterweight co-main event between Johny Hendricks and Stephen Thompson has taken centre stage, becoming the main attraction for UFC Fight Night. This high-stakes bout is scheduled for February 6.
Meanwhile, on the same day, UFC Fight Night: Hendricks vs. Thompson, Anderson Silva, the longtime pound-for-pound best fighter, returns from a yearlong drug suspension and is set to face Michael Bisping in the middleweight division.
UFC Fight Night: Cowboy vs. Means, scheduled for February 21, will feature a middleweight bout between Derek Brunson and Roan Carneiro, as well as a featherweight matchup between Dennis Bermudez and Tatsuya Kawajiri.
In another intriguing bout, Ovince Saint Preux will face Rafael Cavalcante in the light heavyweight division on February 6, at UFC Fight Night: Hendricks vs. Thompson.
Unfortunately, the UFC heavyweight championship bout between Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez has been scrapped due to injuries.
On the Bellator front, Royce Gracie is scheduled to face Ken Shamrock in the openweight division on February 19, Bellator 149. Kimbo Slice is also set to fight Dada 5000 in the heavyweight division on the same night.
Emmanuel Newton will take on Linton Vassell in the light heavyweight division on February 19, Bellator 149, while Marcos Galvao is scheduled to defend his bantamweight title against Eduardo Dantas in Bellator 150 on February 26.
In the flyweight division, Joseph Benavidez, the second-best flyweight in the world, is set to fight Zach Makovsky on February 6, UFC Fight Night: Hendricks vs. Thompson. Marlon Moraes, on the other hand, will defend his bantamweight title against Joseph Barajas in World Series of Fighting 28 on February 20.
As a result of the changes, UFC 196 has been rebranded as a UFC Fight Night on Fox Sports 1. Donald Cerrone will also be in action on February 21, fighting Tim Means in the welterweight division at UFC Fight Night: Cowboy vs. Means.
