Struggling Texans face off against the Jaguars, aiming for a pivotal AFC South triumph
The Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans are set to square off this weekend, with both teams looking to turn their seasons around.
Despite a sore wrist, wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. has been a key player for the Jaguars, leading the team with a team-high 19 targets this season. However, he has managed only five catches for 60 yards. Travis Etienne, the Jaguars' running back, ranks second in rushing yards (214), behind only Indianapolis' Jonathan Taylor.
The Jaguars' defense has been a shining light, leading the league with six takeaways and five interceptions. Their offense ranks fourth in yards per game (389.0) and first in rushing yards per game (169.5).
On the other hand, the Texans are currently winless, with a record of (0-2). Their offense ranks 28th in total yards (265.5 per game) and dead last in scoring offense (14 points per game). Quarterback C.J. Stroud has 395 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception so far this season.
Houston has won their last seven games against the Jaguars, but they will be without cornerback Jaylin Smith due to a hamstring injury. The Texans' offense will also be missing Christian Kirk and Braxton Berrios, who are sidelined with hamstring injuries but participated in limited fashion on Wednesday. Tank Dell, a receiver for the Texans, is currently on injured reserve.
The Jaguars' offensive lineman Ezra Cleveland and tight end Hunter Long missed Wednesday's practice with ankle injuries. Center Jake Andrews, cornerback Kamari Lassiter, safety Jalen Pitre, defensive end Darrell Taylor, and defensive end Darrell Taylor were all limited in practice on Wednesday due to various injuries. Cornerback Jarrian Jones, offensive lineman Wyatt Milum, and running back Bhayshul Tuten were limited participants in practice for the Jaguars due to injuries.
The Jaguars' 2023 offensive lineup underwent changes via free agency and draft additions, with specific starters on the offensive line changing due to trades such as Fred Johnson being traded away, and injuries affecting players like Wyatt Milum and Cole Van. The team employed a running back committee approach and aimed to support their quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, with a strong offensive line.
The Texans are moving further away from recent playoff showings, already two games back in the division. The Jaguars, who currently stand at (1-1), will be hoping to capitalise on the Texans' struggles and secure a much-needed victory. The game between these two AFC South rivals promises to be an exciting one, with both teams eager to prove themselves.
