The Bundesliga journey comes to a tragic end for Holstein Kiel after a solitary season. The debutants from Schleswig-Holstein in the top flight are instantly relegated. VfL Bochum will also partake in the 2nd Bundesliga the following year. Neither club could escape relegation following defeats on the 33rd matchday.

VfL Bochum - 1. FSV Mainz 05 1:4 (0:1)

VfL Bochum's seventh descent from the Bundesliga is confirmed early. Coach Dieter Hecking's squad succumbed to a disheartening 1:4 (0:1) home defeat against FSV Mainz 05, falling short of the dreamed-for relegation playoff spot with 22 points on the final matchday. Hecking had already announced his "yes" for the 2nd Bundesliga the previous week.

Nadiem Amiri (45.+3), Phillipp Mwene (53.), Jonathan Burkardt (73.), and Paul Nebel (90.+3) scored for Mainz, who continued their fight for Europe following seven games without a win. After returning to the Bundesliga in 2021, Bochum, winless in seven games, is now back in the second tier, with Gerrit Holtmann's goal (84.) proving futile.

For the injured Philipp Hofmann, who suffered a collapsed lung against Heidenheim (0:0), Myron Boadu stepped into VfL Bochum's starting lineup. Bochum's goalkeeper, Timo Horn, blocked Burkardt's deflected shot (1.), but Lasse Rieß was in goal for Mainz, replacing the injured starting goalkeeper, Robin Zentner, due to muscular issues. Despite loud support from the fans, Bochum struggled offensively, with the visiting team taking control of play. Ivan Ordets (9.) had to clear Mwene's header off the line in desperation, signifying Bochum's best chance in the first half.

Hecking made changes at halftime, but the second half started zippy. Holtmann (47.) tested Rieß, but Mwene scored on the counterattack (58 minutes), putting Bochum fans in despair. However, a throw-in should have been awarded to Bochum before the goal.

Holstein Kiel - SC Freiburg 1:2 (1:1)

Tears in the North: Holstein Kiel's Bundesliga stint comes to an end after a lone year, while SC Freiburg dreams of a historic Champions League coup. SC Frieburg's dreams are still alive, although Kiel's Bundesliga adventure ends after a 1:2 (1:1) defeat to Breisgauer.

Johan Manzambi (45.+2) and Lukas Höler (58.) scored for Freiburg, bringing their season tally to 16 wins. They could soon face giants like Barcelona or Paris. Kiel can still experience high-level football in their final game against Borussia Dortmund before returning to the 2nd Bundesliga next season.

Lastly, Kiel's offensive form was cause for concern for Freiburg coach Schuster, who demanded a hundred percent focus from his team. Consequently, the Breisgauer started determined and immediately claimed the lead through Ritsu Doan (3 minutes).

Kiel responded with growing self-assurance against the top team, but they primarily relied on their physical prowess. Steven Skrzybski (9 minutes) after a rebound and Alexander Bernhardsson put SCF goalkeeper Noah Atubolu under pressure (22 minutes). The lead was swiftly answered by Matthias Ginter hitting the crossbar seconds later. The guests then put intense pressure on and came close with Vincenzo Grifo's (28 minutes) post shot and Junior Adamu's (36 minutes) header, before Manzambi celebrated.

Schuster's team remained dominant in the second half, showcasing the ruthlessness of a top-tier side. Kiel fought valiantly, but ultimately couldn't prevent their dreams from crumbling.

1. FC Union Berlin - 1. FC Heidenheim 0:3 (0:1)

  1. FC Heidenheim managed to stave off direct relegation and can now hope for survival without the playoffs. With a decisive 3:0 (1:0) victory over Union Berlin, coach Frank Schmidt's squad secured 16th place, ensuring at least a playoff spot.

Adrian Beck (12, 73 minutes) and Jan Schöppner (56 minutes) scored for Heidenheim. The gap to the relegation zone, currently occupied by FC St. Pauli, is now two points, but Hamburg can secure their top-flight status on Sunday (5:30 PM/DAZN and live ticker at ntv.de). Hoffenheim, currently in 15th place with a better goal difference, is still not safe. Union's unbeaten run of eight games came to an end.

RasenBallsport Leipzig's Champions League Dreams Crumble

RB Leipzig has let go of its last opportunity to qualify for the Champions League prematurely. The Saxons failed to secure more than a disappointing 0:0 draw against Werder Bremen on the penultimate Bundesliga matchday, and the club now even faces elimination from the race for another European competition appearance. Nearly four months after the appointment of Jürgen Klopp as RB football chief, Leipzig is not only set to miss the Champions League for the first time in seven years but could also face its first season without European competition since the 2016/17 Bundesliga debut season. Leipzig fell to seventh place.

On the other hand, Werder Bremen's last feeble hopes of European competition also evaporated. The sixth place, which would qualify for the Conference League, appears out of reach for the Green-Whites, given their three-point and several-goal deficit. Werder started strongly and had their first big chance after just 180 seconds, but Marvin Ducksch's shot from six meters was too inaccurate and found its match in Peter Gulacsi, who was returning to the RB goal after a mandatory break due to a concussion.

The hosts dominated the game and seemed inspired by their last hope of Europe in the first half-hour. However, they should have taken the lead in the 38th minute after a fine pass from Ducksch. Romano Schmid suddenly found himself one-on-one with Gulacsi but failed to beat the Hungarian. Leipzig, meanwhile, appeared uninspired and erratic in their attacks and often got bogged down in individual actions in the opposing half. They failed to create a genuine scoring chance in the entire first half.

After the break, Bremen had the better start and had three massive chances right away. Felix Agu blasted the ball over the goal from close range after just 23 seconds, then a shot from Agu from seven meters was blocked in the nick of time just 90 seconds later. Gulacsi then made a stunning save against Oliver Burke, who had shot from close range just 30 seconds after that.

The game played out before 41,000 spectators at the Weser Stadium became increasingly open, with Leipzig also getting chances. A curling shot from Xavi from around 20 meters hit the post (68 minutes), and two minutes later, Werder keeper Michael Zetterer scrambled a shot from the Dutchman out of the goalmouth. On the other side, Bremen kept failing against Gulacsi.
