Struggling sentiment and fewer launches lead to minimal increase in July's passenger vehicle sales
In the dynamic world of India's automobile industry, July 2025 brought a mix of fortunes for various players. While some companies experienced a decline in sales, others reported robust growth.
Tata Motors, a prominent name in the industry, faced a 6% year-on-year (YoY) decline in domestic passenger vehicle (PV) sales. The company dispatched 39,521 units in July 2025, compared to 44,725 units in the same month last year [1]. Despite this setback, Tata Motors managed a 4% YoY growth in their commercial vehicle (CV) segment, with 26,432 units dispatched in July 2025 [6].
Maruti Suzuki, India's largest car manufacturer, reported a relatively flat performance in July 2025, with their passenger vehicle sales remaining largely unchanged YoY. The Dzire model led volumes, but no explicit YoY percent growth figure for total Maruti passenger vehicles was provided [2][4].
On the flip side, Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) showed strong growth, with their domestic SUV sales surging 20% YoY to 49,871 units in July 2025 [3]. This robust growth extended to M&M's overall volumes, which grew 26% YoY to 83,691 units in the same month [3]. The growth at M&M was attributed to the launch of the XUV 3XO 'REVX' Series and the commencement of deliveries for Pack two variants of the BE 6 and XEV 9E models.
Hero MotoCorp, a leading two-wheeler manufacturer, also posted strong numbers, with a 18% YoY growth in two-wheeler sales in July 2025. However, specific July 2025 YoY domestic sales growth figures for Hero MotoCorp were not available in the given search results [7].
Other notable mentions include Kia India, which achieved an 8% YoY sales growth in July 2025, with 22,135 units sold [5]. TVS Motor Company and Royal Enfield also reported positive numbers in two-wheeler sales in July 2025.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor India reported a 10% decline in sales in July 2025, with 43,973 units sold [8]. Both Honda Cars India and Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported a decline in their YoY sales as well. In the two-wheeler segment, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) reported a 6% YoY growth in two-wheeler sales in July 2025, with 4,66,331 units sold, surpassing Hero MotoCorp [9].
As the industry navigates these changes, India continues to defend its energy policy in relation to the reported halt in Russian oil, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is rallying for a 'Swadeshi' drive, possibly in response to US trade-related pressure [10]. Additionally, there is a reported bottleneck in India's beer industry due to a preference for bottles over cans [11].
