Matadores Suffer Fifth Loss of the Season Against La Habra High

The Matadores faced a tough challenge last Thursday night against La Habra High, and unfortunately, they came up short, losing 48-21. This marks the fifth loss of the season for La Mirada High.

In the first half, La Habra scored on all six of their possessions, amassing over 300 yards of offense. The Matadores' defense struggled to contain the talented La Habra offense, allowing over 460 yards in total.

The Matadores' offense struggled in the first half as well, scoring no more than 15 points for the fifth time this season. La Mirada junior quarterback Santino Garcia was sacked for a nine-yard loss on third and eight from their 48-yard line in the second quarter, forcing them to punt. However, senior running back Jordan Lauago managed to score a 60-yard touchdown in the first quarter, providing a glimmer of hope for the Matadores.

La Habra's Kevika Martinez scored the first touchdown of the game on an eight-yard run, and their quarterback combination of D.J. Mitchell and Kenneth Saucedo completed five passes for 74 yards in the first quarter. La Habra's offense was relentless, and they continued to add to their lead throughout the game.

Coach Mealy believes that La Habra is a talented team and that the Matadores could have won some of their previous games against them. He also mentions that the non-league schedule was tough. In an effort to bolster their offense, Coach Mealy has brought in two senior transfers, Drew Cobos from La Serna High and Tuiono Tuifua from John Glenn High, who will be eligible to play for La Mirada and help in the backfield.

These transfers will allow other players to play other positions, according to Coach Mealy. In the game against La Habra, senior linebacker Spencer Ammons led the Matadores with seven and a half tackles. Bobby Brooks, son of former Norwalk High and John Glenn High baseball head coach Jack Brooks and grandson of former La Mirada baseball head coach and athletic director Kim Brooks, scored from five yards out in the first quarter.

The Matadores will host Downey High in their next game, the only team in the Gateway League with four wins this season. La Mirada has lost all four meetings against Downey High since 2018. However, the Matadores need to win at least three games to assure themselves of third place in league.

The Matadores will be looking to bounce back from their loss to La Habra and get their first home win since Sept. 6 when they face Downey High. Let's hope they can find their form and secure a much-needed victory.
