In a worrying tale from the Austrian Tennen Mountains, a family of five became stranded during their hike. Hailing from Baden-Württemberg, located near Heidelberg in Germany, the family consisted of three adventurous children aged 8, 10, and 14. On a mission for a thrilling mountain traverse, their journey took an ominous turn.

Dressed to impress, the parents donned appropriate hiking shoes. However, the children, kitted out in running shoes, raised concerns among mountain rescuers, who deemed this footwear inadequate for the high-altitude tour.

The family's daunting adventure began on a Friday morning, with hopes of reaching the solden hut by ascending the Hochthron ladder at approximately 2,500 meters above sea level. Unfortunately, their plans were thwarted by poor equipment and unpredictable old snowfields, making the 7-hour trail an almost insurmountable challenge.

Despite the hut keeper's advisory against attempting such a lengthy and demanding trek, the family pressed on. Setting off from the Ellmau hut in Werfenweng at 8:30 a.m., they soon found themselves battling exhaustion and unforeseen obstacles.

As day turned into night, the family repeatedly called the hut keeper to announce their delayed arrival. At 6 p.m., worried about their progress, they dialed the emergency number. Crucially, they shared their location – the Tauern saddle at around 2,100 meters. With no more advancement in sight, the family was in dire need of assistance.

Responding to the emergency call, mountain rescuers scrambled from their Werfen station and reached the stranded family by 3:15 a.m. The team secured the shivery family with ropes over the treacherous snowfields, successfully bringing them back to the hut unharmed but freezing.

Operation leader Stefan Koller admitted that the family was ill-prepared for the arduous mountain challenge. Despite the presence of a headlamp, rain gear, or bivouac bags, the family had no means to protect themselves from the harsh Alpine conditions. "The family had been hiking for 17 hours without knowing the danger," said Koller, underlining the importance of careful planning and attention to weather and snow conditions.
