Austrian Alps: German Family Secured by Mountain Rescuers after Seven-Hour Trek

Werfen, Austria - A family from Baden-Württemberg, Germany, were rescued in the early hours of Saturday from the Tennen Mountains in the Salzburg province. The rescue operation involved eleven mountain rescuers from Werfen, who helped the family, consisting of five members – two parents and children aged 8, 10, and 14 – to safety after they were unable to continue their journey due to poor equipment and challenging snowfields.

The family had embarked on a seven-hour traverse of the mountains from the Ellmau hut in Werfenweng (Pongau) on Friday, disregarding the hut keeper's advice against it due to their ill-equipped conditions. Starting at 8:30 a.m., they intended to reach the Solden hut via the Hochthronleiter, approximately 2,500 meters above sea level. However, the father repeatedly called the hut keeper throughout the day, each time predicting a later arrival.

By 11:00 p.m., the family, stranded at Tauernscharte (2,100 meters), could not proceed, and the father dialed the emergency number. Mountain rescuers soon descended to the family's location, securing them with ropes over old snowfields, and finally brought them to the hut safely by 3:15 a.m. While unharmed, they were cold and suffering from hypothermia, according to operation leader Stefan Koller.

The family lacked essential safety equipment, such as rain gear, a headlamp, and a bivouac bag. Their 17-hour hike, potentially unaware of the danger, emphasizes the importance of planning a mountain tour meticulously and paying heed to weather conditions and snow scenarios.

When mountain hiking, it is imperative to consider essential safety equipment such as sturdy hiking boots, breathable clothing, a hiking kit, sunscreen, insect repellent, emergency supplies, ID, and contact information.
