The dream of Germany's premier league comes crashing down for Holstein Kiel, the first and only team from Schleswig-Holstein to grace the top flight, after just one tumultuous season. Comrades Bochum also bid their farewells, destined to play in the 2nd Bundesliga next year, with neither team managing to escape the jaws of defeat on Matchday 33.

VfL Bochum - 1.FSV Mainz 05 1:4 (0:1)

A seventh relegation from the Bundesliga becomes an unavoidable reality for Bochum as their home game against Mainz 05 ends dismally in a 4-1 rout. Coach Dieter Hecking's team, who had already bid their goodbyes to the Bundesliga a week prior, could not claw their way into the coveted relegation playoff spot with only 22 points remaining on the final matchday.

Nadiem Amiri (45.+3) with a spectacular free kick, Phillipp Mwene (53.), Jonathan Burkardt (73.), and Paul Nebel (90.+3) found the back of the net for Mainz, who continue to fight for Europe after seven consecutive losses. Bochum, rudderless after their seven-game winless streak, are back to the second division, with Gerrit Holtmann's goalless effort (84.) unable to turn the tide.

Myron Boadu replaced the injured Philipp Hofmann, who collapsed a lung against Heidenheim (0:0), in the VfL starting lineup. But it was Mainz supporters who almost cheered in elation after Burkardt's deflected shot (1'). Despite deafening support from their fans, Bochum struggled to create offensively, with the guests dominating the game. Ivan Ordets (9.) barely averted disaster, saving Mwene's header off the line in the nick of time. The best chance for Bochum in the first half was an own goal by Stefan Bell (23.), narrowly avoided. As the half dwindled, Bochum retreated defensively, visibly trying to preserve a clean sheet through halftime. But Amiri's beautiful curling shot from outside the box in added time put a damper on those plans.

Hecking made three substitutions at halftime, which seemed to revitalize the team, at least initially. But the second half started off explosively. Holtmann (47.) tested Rieß immediately, but Mwene (53') scored after a Mainz throw-in, leaving Bochum's unhappy fans singing the 2nd Bundesliga anthem prematurely. However, a throw-in should have been awarded to Bochum before the goal.

Holstein Kiel - SC Freiburg 1:2 (1:1)

Watery eyes abound in the north as Holstein Kiel's dream of the Bundesliga comes to an untimely end after a heart-wrenching 2-1 defeat against Freiburg. While the Breisgauers dream of a Champions League coup, their northern adversaries will be playing second fiddle in the 2nd Bundesliga next season.

Johan Manzambi (45.+2) and Lukas Höler (58') sealed 16 wins for SCF, who could soon be squaring off against Barcelona or Paris. The Kielers can look forward to a few more seasoned matches against Borussia Dortmund before they face the rigors of the 2nd Bundesliga.

Tactical Shift Emphasized:Freiburg coach Christian Schuster demanded absolute focus from his team in light of Kiel's offensive prowess. Consequently, the Breisgauers took an immediate and determined stance, threatening to take an early lead through Ritsu Doan (3').

As Kiel gained momentum with physicality and increasing confidence, they began to rattle the top squad. Steven Skrzybski (9') after a rebound and the formidable Swede Alexander Bernhardsson created pressing moments for SCF's Atubolu (22'). The lead was quickly matched when a shot from Freiburg's Matthias Ginter struck the bar (17'). The guests then stepped on the gas, creating numerous opportunities like Vincenzo Grifo's (28') post-shot and Junior Adamu's (36') header. Manzambi (45.+2) subsequently put an end to Kiel's dreams.

Schuster's team dominated the second half, demonstrating the efficiency of a top-tier squad. Although Kiel fought valiantly, they ultimately failed to keep their aspirations alive.

1.FC Union Berlin - 1.FC Heidenheim 0:3 (0:1)

Heidenheim avoids direct relegation and harbors hopes of avoiding the playoffs. With a resounding 3-0 (1-0) victory over Union Berlin, coach Frank Schmidt's high-performing team secured 16th place ahead of Holstein Kiel and VfL Bochum, ensuring that they at least have a shot at playoff participation.

Adrian Beck (12', 73') and Jan Schöppner (56') scored for the Heidenheimers. The gap to the relegation zone, currently occupied by FC St. Pauli, is two points, but the Hamburgers still have a chance to secure their top-flight status on Sunday (5:30 PM CEST/DAZN and ntv.de live ticker). Above them, TSG Hoffenheim has three more points and a superior goal difference than Heidenheim. Union's unbeaten streak, which had lasted eight games, came to an abrupt end.

Both teams felt each other out for a while, with no dangerous situations arising until the 12th minute. Then Schöppner managed to work the ball in front of the Berlin goal, where Marvin Pieringer laid it off for Beck to give Heidenheim an early lead.

On the Berlin side, Christopher Trimmel (19') had the first significant shot, which goalkeeper Kevin Müller, who suffered a concussion against Bochum the previous week, saved spectacularly. Müller cheered his men on from the stands. In a sluggish first half, neither team was able to create threatening offensive opportunities.

The opening minutes of the second half followed the pattern of the first, with neither team creating meaningful chances. From a slow game, Heidenheim struck – and didn't squander the opportunity. Feller launched a free kick far forward, which Pieringer headed on for Schöppner to finish confidently. Berlin's apparent equalizer through Janik Haberer (58'), disallowed after a VAR review for offside, came too late to alter the game's outcome. Unable to produce the necessary offensive pressure, the hosts ultimately succumbed.

Werder Bremen - Rasenballsport Leipzig 0:0

Leipzig missed a final opportunity to secure a spot in the Champions League, falling short in a disappointing 0-0 draw against Werder Bremen in their penultimate Bundesliga match. The Saxons now face the prospect of missing the Champions League for the first time in seven years, and may not even compete in European competition next season. The club has declined to seventh place.

Meanwhile, Werder Bremen's dwindling hopes of European competition have vanished. The sixth place, which guarantees participation in the Conference League, remains out of reach for the Green-Whites given the three-point and several-goal deficit. Werder began the game strongly, threatening to score after only 180 seconds, but Marvin Ducksch's shot lacked precision and was saved by Peter Gulacsi, who returned to the Leipzig goal after a concussion hiatus.

The hosts controlled the early stages, with their remaining European aspirations seemingly spurring them on. They played gallantly, and should have taken the lead in the 38th minute when Romano Schmid found himself one-on-one with Gulacsi, but he failed to convert.

After the break, Bremen intensified their offensive efforts and had three significant chances in quick succession. Felix Agu fired the ball high from close range (46'), followed almost immediately by a shot blocked just in time by Gulacsi (47'). Oliver Burke (48') then missed an excellent opportunity, shooting wide.

The game then evolved into an open exchange in front of the 41,000 spectators at the Weser Stadium, with Leipzig occasionally threatening. A curling shot from Xavi struck the post (68'), and two minutes later, Werder keeper Michael Zetterer denied a shot from the Dutchman. Meanwhile, Bremen continued to hammer away at the Leipzig defense.
