The Bundesliga journey comes to an end for Holstein Kiel after a single, gut-wrenching season. The historical first-ever top-flight squad from Schleswig-Holstein finds themselves immediately relegated. VfL Bochum won't be gracing the Bundesliga next year either. Neither club can save themselves after matchday 33 defeats.

VfL Bochum - 1. FSV Mainz 05 1:4 (0:1)

Bochum's seventh relegation from the Bundesliga is sealed early. Coach Dieter Hecking's desperate team lost their home game against FSV Mainz 05 1:4 (0:1) and cannot reach the hoped-for relegation playoff spot with 22 points on the final matchday. Hecking had already admitted their fate the previous week.

Nadiem Amiri (45.+3), Phillipp Mwene (53'), Jonathan Burkardt (73'), and Paul Nebel (90.+3) scored for Mainz, who continue to fight for Europe after seven consecutive winless games. After their return to the Bundesliga in 2021, the now winless bottom side Bochum descends back to the 2. Bundesliga, with Gerrit Holtmann's goal (84.) being too little, too late.

For the injured Philipp Hofmann, who had suffered a collapsed lung against Heidenheim (0:0), Myron Boadu took his place in the VfL starting lineup. They almost instantly regretted it. Mainz fans rang out in jubilation. Bochum goalkeeper Timo Horn managed to save Burkardt's deflected shot (1.). Despite boisterous support from the fans, the home team struggled offensively, with the visitors dictating play. Ivan Ordets (9.) had to clear a header from Mwene off the line in desperation. The best chance for Bochum in the first half was almost an own goal by Stefan Bell (23.). The home team grew increasingly on the back foot, trying to preserve a clean sheet through the first half. However, Amiri curled the ball into the net from over 20 meters in added time.

Hecking made three changes at halftime, but the second half started quickly. Holtmann (47.) tested Rieß, but Mwene scored unchallenged after a Mainz throw-in, leading the VfL fans to sing about the 2. Bundesliga before the hour mark - but it should have been a throw-in for Bochum.

Holstein Kiel - SC Freiburg 1:2 (1:1)

Agony in the North: Holstein Kiel's only Bundesliga season is over - SC Freiburg dreams of a Champions League miracle. While the northerners must let go of their dreams after a 1:2 (1:1) defeat to the Breisgauer, Schuster's team of the season could soon be facing Barcelona or Paris.

Johan Manzambi (45.+2) and Lukas Höler (58') secured the 16th league victory for SCF, who are on the brink of their first-ever Champions League qualification. Kiel can still enjoy some football at the top level against Borussia Dortmund before returning to the 2. Bundesliga next season.

1. FC Union Berlin - 1. FC Heidenheim 0:3 (0:1)

  1. FC Heidenheim avoided direct relegation and can now hope for survival without the playoffs. With a convincing 3:0 (1:0) win over Union Berlin, coach Frank Schmidt's highly efficient team secured at least the playoffs and the 16th place, ahead of Holstein Kiel and VfL Bochum.

Adrian Beck (12', 73'), Jan Schöppner (56'), and Stefan Bell (82') scored the goals for Heidenheim. The gap to the relegation zone and FC St. Pauli is now down to just one point, but the Hamburg team can secure survival on Sunday (5:30 PM/DAZN and live ticker at ntv.de) against Eintracht Frankfurt. Before them, TSG Hoffenheim, not yet safe, has three more points and a better goal difference than Heidenheim. Union's unbeaten run of five games came to an end.

Both teams felt each other out for a long time, with no dangerous situations until the 12th minute. Then Schöppner managed to bring the ball to the Berlin goal, where Marvin Pieringer set it up for Beck to put Heidenheim ahead early.

On the Berlin side, Christopher Trimmel (19') had the first dangerous shot, which goalkeeper Frank Feller spectacularly saved. Feller was in goal as a replacement for regular keeper Kevin Müller, who had suffered a concussion against Bochum last week. Müller cheered his team on from the stands. In a tough first half, neither team could create dangerous offensive actions.

The start of the second half was a carbon copy of the first. From a slow game, Heidenheim got a chance - and took it. Feller launched a free kick far forward, which Pieringer headed on and Schöppner finished clinically. The apparent equalizer for Berlin through Janik Haberer (58') was disallowed after a VAR review due to an offside position. The capital city team was then too predictable and barely made it into the opposing half. Beck then made it 3:0 with another strong attack from the guests.

Werder Bremen - Rasenballsport Leipzig 0:0

Leipzig's Champions League Dreams Shatter: Leipzig squandered their final opportunity to secure a spot in the Champions League prematurely. The Saxons settled for a disappointing 0:0 draw against Werder Bremen on the penultimate Bundesliga matchday, leaving them facing the possibility of being knocked out of the fight for another European competition appearance. Almost four months after the appointment of Jürgen Klopp as the club's football chief, Leipzig now seems destined to miss the Champions League for the first time in seven years, and potentially facing their first season without European competition since the 2016/17 Bundesliga debut season, plummeting to seventh place.

On the other hand, Werder Bremen's European hopes have also vanished. The sixth-place spot, which would secure a berth in the Conference League, is effectively out of reach for them, given the three-point and several-goal gap. Bremen started strongly and had their first big chance after just 180 seconds, but Marvin Ducksch's shot from six meters was inaccurate, thwarted by Peter Gulacsi, who had returned to the Leipzig goal after his enforced break due to a concussion.

Bremen dominated the game in the first half-hour, with their remaining European hopes driving them on. The hosts played dominantly and tenaciously, and they should have scored in the 38th minute. After a fine pass from Ducksch, Romano Schmid suddenly found himself one-on-one with Gulacsi but failed to beat the Hungarian.

Leipzig, meanwhile, struggled to find inspiration and composure in attack, often getting bogged down in individual actions in the opposing half. The Löw team, missing the suspended David Raum and Kevin Kampl, failed to create a clear-cut chance in the entire first half.

After the break, Bremen started stronger and had three big chances right away. Felix Agu blasted the ball over the bar from close range after 23 seconds, followed by a shot from Agu from seven meters being blocked at the last moment just 90 seconds later. Gulacsi then made a stunning save against Oliver Burke, who shot from close range. The game in front of 41,000 fans at the Weserstadion then developed into a tense exchange, with Leipzig creating chances as well. A curling shot from Xavi from around 20 meters hit the post (68th minute), and two minutes later, Werder keeper Michael Zetterer tipped a shot from the Dutchman onto the post. On the other side, Bremen continued to find Gulacsi in their way.
