La Mirada High Faces Tough League Schedule After Loss to La Habra High

La Mirada High School's football team suffered a 48-21 loss to La Habra High last Thursday night, dropping their record to 1-4 for the season. The Matadores had been 1-4 heading into their bye week last season, but managed to go 2-3 in league action.

In the game against La Habra, quarterback Santino Garcia went 18 of 31 for 227 yards. However, the Matadores' defense struggled to contain La Habra's offense, allowing over 460 yards. La Habra scored six touchdowns in the first half, while La Mirada could only manage one touchdown in the first quarter.

Junior wide receiver Aaron Castro caught six passes for 69 yards, while senior linebacker Spencer Ammons led the Matadores with seven and a half tackles. Kevika Martinez scored the first touchdown for La Habra High just four plays into the contest.

The loss to La Habra High means that La Mirada High needs to win at least three games to assure itself of third place in league. The Matadores have lost all four meetings against Downey High since 2018, and they will host Downey High in their next game. Downey High is coming off a 35-32 road loss to Red Mountain High out of Mesa, AZ.

The Matadores' league schedule does not get any easier. Half of La Mirada's four wins two seasons ago came in non-league games, so the team will need to find a way to turn things around in league play. Senior transfers Drew Cobos (La Serna High) and Tuiono Tuifua (John Glenn High) will be eligible to play for La Mirada High, helping in the backfield.

La Mirada High will have a bye week next week before their game against Downey High. The Matadores will be looking to bounce back and secure a win against their league rivals.
