Kenya has found itself indirectly embroiled in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with a Kenyan citizen named Evans being detained in Ukraine since September 17.

Evans, a single parent to a 16-year-old daughter in Kenya, was detained by Ukraine's 57th Motorised Infantry Brigade. According to reports, he had been deployed to the frontline alongside recruits from Russia, Belarus, Tajikistan, and several African countries.

Evans claims he was tricked into signing a military enlistment contract written in Russian, and was subsequently driven to a military camp and told he could not leave. He received one week of basic training, which he described as chaotic.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of recruiting foreign fighters from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Moscow, however, has denied these claims. Independent investigations have confirmed the identities of over 130,000 Russian soldiers killed in the war.

In a statement, President William Ruto of Kenya called the war unjust and urged respect for national sovereignty. The conflict has caused one of the largest casualty tolls in Europe since World War II, with more than 1.09 million Russian personnel reportedly killed or wounded since the start of the full-scale invasion.

The war has also had economic implications for Kenya. Ukraine's grain imports are crucial for Kenya, and disruptions have increased local food prices.

Other African prisoners held in Ukraine come from various African nations, although the exact nationalities of those held are not specified. There have been reports of Africans being lured to Russia with promises of jobs, education, or residency, only to find themselves in military camps and on the frontlines.

Evans, fearing for his life in Russia, has expressed his desire to return to Kenya. Ukrainian forces have reported capturing other African nationals fighting for Russia.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the far-reaching effects of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, extending beyond the borders of the warring nations. The international community continues to watch the situation closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution.
