Mercedes' Formula 1 Future Takes Shape as Russell and Antonelli Remain Central
In the world of Formula 1, the future of the Mercedes team is starting to take shape, with team principal Toto Wolff confirming that George Russell and Kimi Antonelli will remain with the team for the 2026 season.
Wolff, in an interview, emphasized that the contract negotiations with both drivers are ongoing, but he expressed strong confidence in retaining them. Russell himself has confirmed that it's a matter of "when not if" he will sign a new deal, indicating no rush for the discussions to take place.
Russell, who has been delivering consistently for Mercedes, remains central to the team's future plans. Antonelli, who has been going scoreless in the last three races, is expected to continue alongside Russell in an unchanged line-up.
The rumors about world champion Max Verstappen moving to Mercedes have been dispelled, as Verstappen confirmed he will stay with Red Bull in 2026. This removal of uncertainty has solidified Mercedes’ 2026 driver lineup as Russell and Antonelli.

Russell has expressed that he needs to consider what's in the best interest of both parties in contract negotiations. He is reportedly interested in a long-term contract if Mercedes can fight for the title after the major rule overhaul from next year.
Meanwhile, Red Bull faces uncertainty with the departure of engine partner Honda and recent controversies surrounding the sacking of long-time team principal Christian Horner.
In other news, Lewis Hamilton, a Ferrari star and former driver of Mercedes, consoled Kimi Antonelli during a brief visit to the motorhome after his early exit in the Belgian Grand Prix qualifying.
In the constructors' championship, McLaren, powered by Mercedes engines, is 296 points ahead of Mercedes after 13 world championship races. George Russell, one of the drivers for Mercedes, has lost sight of the overall leader in the drivers' championship.
