Tlaxcala, Mexico, faced a severe hailstorm on Sunday, July 6, 2025, resulting in significant damage across the region. The storm brought heavy rains and hail, causing flooding, landslides, and material damages in Tlaxcala and surrounding municipalities.

The hailstorm was particularly intense in Tlaxcala, with reports of up to 30 centimeters of hail accumulation in several points of the capital and its surroundings[1]. The climatic phenomenon began around 16:00 hours with heavy rains that turned into a heavy hailstorm[2].

One of the most significant damages reported was the collapse of the roof of the Hotel San Francisco, a government-owned facility in the state capital[3]. The collapsed structure was a 972 square meter metal structure supporting a dome of the same size made of polycarbonate plates[4]. Fortunately, no injured persons were reported as a result of the incident, and the hotel management confirmed that no guests, collaborators, or visitors were physically affected by the collapse[5].

The Ocotlán highway also experienced temporary road closures due to excessive accumulated water[1]. In addition, special support was provided to merchants affected by the Sunday market in Chiautempan due to the extreme weather conditions[6].

Authorities have urged the public to stay informed and apply preventive measures in case of new storms in the coming days[7]. Civil Protection continues to monitor the region for potential further damages and provide support to affected areas[1].

It's worth noting that three young people were found dead in Tlaxcala due to gas intoxication in a hotel, unrelated to the hailstorm incident[8]. The municipalities of Apetatitlán and Texoloc, in addition to Tlaxcala and Chiautempan, were also affected by the hailstorm[1].

The emergency response plans of Tlaxcala and Chiautempan municipal governments were immediately activated. Civil protection brigades were activated to ensure the affected area and facilitate the evacuation of people in the hotel at the time of the collapse[9].

Videos and reports from social media confirm the scale of the hailstorm and the aftermath, showing flooded areas and damage consistent with such extreme weather events[5].
