Struck Boy Attending Farewell of Pyrotechnics: Injured Child During Fireworks Display

The Baltic Stadium was the scene of a dramatic incident on the evening of March 16, during the farewell match of FC Hansa Rostock. The pyro show, which was intended to be a celebratory event, ended in chaos as unauthorised pyrotechnics were used.

The pyro show, which was approved by the Hanseatic city of Rostock, included Bengal lights and unapproved rockets. However, these unauthorised pyrotechnics caused a hole on the roof of the stadium and fell onto the tribune, injuring at least four spectators, including a nine-year-old boy who suffered severe burns. The boy was transferred from a Rostock hospital to a specialist clinic in Lübeck.

Ronald Maul, CEO of FC Hansa Rostock, expressed his disappointment about the incident and stated that they will wait for the report from the criminal police for more clarity. Maul also spoke with the affected parents on the phone and offered support to the family of the injured boy.

FC Hansa has also contacted the family of the injured nine-year-old boy to offer further support. Everything else regarding the support for the affected persons will depend on what they wish.

It is still unclear which group used the unauthorised pyrotechnics, and the exact person or persons responsible for firing the Bengal lights and unapproved rockets remains unspecified. The application for approval for the pyrotechnics during the farewell ceremony included official requirements that were approved by both the city and the fire department.

However, only twelve effect hand flares (category T1) per floodlight mast were covered in the permit for the pyro show. The pyrotechnics were not fired by specially trained pyrotechnicians, according to FC Hansa.

Other ignited pyrotechnic devices, which are suspected to have caused the injuries, were neither applied for nor approved. The old floodlight towers of the Baltic Stadium burned for the last time during the match, which ended with a score of 2:1 in favor of FC Hansa Rostock.

The authorities are currently investigating the incident, and more information is expected to be released in the coming days. In the meantime, FC Hansa and the city of Rostock have expressed their deepest sympathies to the affected families and have pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation.
