Strong winds from Storm Floris raise concerns, as weather advisories are released for eight different counties.
Storm Floris to Bring Wet and Windy Conditions to Ireland
Ireland is bracing for Storm Floris, a powerful weather system set to hit the country on Sunday night, August 4, 2025. Met Éireann has issued multiple Status Yellow weather warnings for several counties, highlighting potential hazards such as flooding, power outages, and travel difficulties.
From 2am to 1pm on Monday, a Status Yellow wind warning is in effect for Clare, Galway, Mayo, and Sligo, with damaging gusts and shifting winds from southwest to westerly. Another wind warning covers Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, and Leitrim from 4am to 4pm Monday. Additionally, a Status Yellow rain warning from 2am to 10am Monday applies to Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, and Sligo, where heavy showers and possible thunder could cause localised flooding.
The storm is expected to track across the country overnight Sunday into Monday, with the worst conditions occurring in the early hours, particularly in the northwest. After morning rain clears eastwards, scattered showers and sunshine will follow, with easing winds. Temperatures will range from 16°C to 21°C through Monday.
On Sunday, a few well-scattered showers are set to develop, with highs of 16-22 degrees. Clear and brighter spells are expected on Sunday following cloud and rain in the morning.
The warnings highlight potential impacts such as hazardous travel, structural damage, fallen trees, power outages, wave overtopping coastal areas, and disruption to outdoor events. The storm is anticipated to bring the strongest gusts in northern areas, reaching 60 to 70 mph in some places.
In Northern Ireland, Storm Floris is also expected to bring strong, unseasonably windy conditions combined with heavy rain early in the week.
Tuesday is to be a drier and brighter day with good sunny spells and scattered showers. The warnings remain in effect for counties Clare, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, and Leitrim.
Met Éireann has advised the public to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and to take necessary precautions to ensure safety during the storm.
