Strong endorsement for the European Union to prepare Ukraine's military forces, according to the Union's security chief.

The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to dominate international headlines, with both sides making significant moves in recent weeks.

In a bid to strengthen Ukraine's defence capabilities, the European Union has trained over 80,000 Ukrainian soldiers outside Ukraine's borders. According to reports, this training could be part of broader western security guarantees for Ukraine, a suggestion made by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that Ukrainian forces are pushing out pockets of Russian troops from the northeastern border region of Sumy. This progress comes as Zelensky stated on August 29 that Russia is building up a force of approximately 100,000 troops near the eastern Ukrainian stronghold of Pokrovsk.

The US President, Donald Trump, indicated that the US could play a role in backing up a European peacekeeping plan, but would not deploy its soldiers to Ukraine. Moscow, on the other hand, has continued to stall on a potential meeting between Putin and Zelensky.

In a positive development, Kallas stated that there is broad support in the EU to conduct training for Kyiv's military within Ukraine. She also suggested that after a truce, the EU could expand its military mission mandate to provide training and advice inside Ukraine. Kallas further proposed that EU trainers could be placed in Ukrainian military academies and institutions.

However, the deputy head of the Ukrainian Presidential Office, Colonel Pavlo Palisa, proposes continuing the training and mobilization of Ukrainian military personnel within Ukraine even if a ceasefire with Russia is established. Palisa emphasized the need for the armed forces to remain operational and for new recruits to replace those already deployed.

As discussions among western powers continue regarding how to guarantee Ukraine's security in case of a truce deal, Moscow has carried out waves of bombardments on Ukraine, including deadly strikes on Kyiv a few days ago. Despite these challenges, all parties involved - America, Europe, and Ukraine - have expressed a desire for peace in the ongoing conflict.
