Streaking Soccer Players Protest Against Corporate Influence - Stripped Athletes Protest Against Commercial Exploitation in Football

Football in its rawest form: Nude soccer players and bare-skinned players take the field to advocate for a more natural football culture in a recent event in Herne, North Rhine-Westphalia. This match, called "The Ruhrpottoriginale", marked the 10-year anniversary of the "Bare-Skinned German Squad" - a team of 23 athletes, consisting of both male and female players, adorned only in football shoes, socks, and their jersey numbers painted on their bare skin.

Naked and uninhibited

Despite some skepticism, all 1,500 pre-sold tickets for the match at Stadion am Schloss Strünkede were snatched up. The audience witnessed an intriguing game of amateur football, where singularity was the key focus, as initiator Gerrit Starczewski also considered it an art performance. Starczewski describes the experience, "For the players, it's a liberation from societal constraints. It brings a unique, unmatched feeling of freedom."

Expressing discontent with societal norms and consumerism, Starczewski had previously taken group photos of individuals stripped of their clothes at music festivals as a form of protest. "I wanted to integrate this experience with my love for football and create something extraordinary," recalls Starczewski, a devout VfL Bochum supporter.

A Wholesome Spectacle: Scarcity of Opponents

Starczewski dreamt of flaunting FIFA with a literal "bare-all club," expressing his belief that "Football must maintain its naturality, and what better way to emphasize that than by displaying our bare bodies on the pitch." The inaugural match took place in 2015, and since then, the squad has periodically hit the football field without their uniforms.

Starczewski takes pride in the first international encounter of his bare-skinned team: in 2020, the squad faced the Dutch "Nacktionalteam." To date, this remains the only international encounter of this unique kind. "That also highlights the ability's scarcity," Starczewski notes, "to find opponents willing to join us in this format."

Courage and Camaraderie: The Opposing Team

The "Pottoriginale," a team of conventional athletes from the Ruhrgebiet, donned typical jerseys and shorts for their play against the exhibitionist team. Starczewski explains, "That's the beauty of this event - it promotes camaraderie, inspiring individuals to overcome societal norms and animosity."
