In the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, drone warfare has taken a significant turn, with both sides intensifying their operations.

Recent events have seen an attack on an enterprise in Penza, Russia, resulting in one woman's death and two other people being wounded. The SBU, Ukraine's security service, reported that the strikes hit a company in Russia's southern Penza region, which works for the Russian military-industrial complex. Meanwhile, an elderly man was killed in the Samara region due to a fire caused by falling drone debris.

Ukrainian drone strikes have been a frequent occurrence, particularly since late 2024. These operations have targeted military infrastructure, energy facilities, and airbases deep inside Russia, with some attacks reaching over 1,000 kilometers from the border. Notable strikes include multiple attacks on sites such as the Kazan Orgsintez chemical plant, Gorbunov Kazan Aviation Plant, oil depots, and refineries in Kazan, Lyudinovo, Nizhny Novgorod, and Volgograd in January 2025.

The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) launched simultaneous drone strikes on multiple Russian airbases including Olenya (Arctic), Belaya (Siberia), Diaghilev, and Ivanovo in June 2025, reportedly destroying dozens of strategic and nuclear-capable aircraft.

Russia, in response, has heavily increased its own drone and missile attacks on Ukraine. According to Russia's defence ministry, they claimed to have destroyed 112 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory, with 34 being destroyed over the Rostov region. Sliusar, acting Rostov governor, claimed that the military repelled a massive air attack and destroyed drones over seven districts.

The impact of these strikes has been significant in terms of material damage to Russian military aviation and infrastructure, forcing operational halts and raising concerns about Russia’s defensive vulnerabilities even far from the frontline.

Russia has also dramatically increased its use of drones (especially Shahed-type) to strike Ukrainian targets. This drone-centric tactic replaces more expensive missile strikes with mass-produced, harder-to-intercept drones deployed in large coordinated waves to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defenses.

In a bid to end the conflict, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has renewed his call for a meeting between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The United States has proposed such a meeting, and Ukraine has supported it. However, Russia's President Putin wants peace but his demands for ending Moscow's military offensive are "unchanged," which include that Ukraine abandon territory and end ambitions to join NATO. What is needed, according to Zelensky, is Russia's readiness for the proposed meeting.

This evolving drone war has strategic implications for air defense, military readiness, and conflict dynamics on both sides. As the conflict continues, both Ukraine and Russia seem to be relying more on drone warfare, signaling an escalating phase in their ongoing conflict.

  1. The increase in drone warfare between Ukraine and Russia, as evidenced by the strategic attacks on Russian military infrastructure and the response by Russia's defense ministry, underscores the political implications and rising tensions in the analysis of war-and-conflicts, forming a significant part of general news.
  2. The escalating use of drone warfare in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, as demonstrated by the frequency of drone strikes, the deployment of drones like Shahed-type, and the heavy response from both sides, suggests a shift towards a more complex, intensive, and potentially dangerous phase in the ongoing political conflict.
