Striker Awoniyi Emerges From Coma After Previous Unconsciousness in Bundesliga

Late-night news has it that former Bundesliga star Taiwo Awoniyi has come to, following his emergency abdominal surgery, as reported by the BBC. The Nottingham Forest striker, who made a reported €20 million move from 1. FC Union Berlin last year, was placed in an artificial coma earlier this week.

Reportedly, the Nottingham Forest marksman fell victim to a perforated bowel after colliding with a goalpost in the dying moments of their recent home fixture against Leicester City. The Nigerian international managed to carry on playing despite the agony, eventually crashing out due to the severity of his injuries.

By Monday night, the 27-year-old underwent surgery and was subsequently placed in the ICU. The coma was necessary to keep his movements minimal and control his heart rate during his recovery process.

Luckily, on Wednesday, as per the BBC, the medical team managed to close Awoniyi's wound during another operation, allowing him to come out of the coma in the evening. The club has stated that there is no sign of a life-threatening condition.

Tumultuous Medical Deliberations

Confusion has surfaced regarding Awoniyi's on-field injury back in Sunday's Leicester City game (2:2). Despite apparent distress, Awoniyi continued playing after initial medical assessments. Post-game, Nottingham Forest shared a statement expressing disappointment that he was permitted to play under the circumstances. The incident is currently under investigation.

In the aftermath of the incident, there was a heated exchange between Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis and the club's coach, Nuno Espirito Santo, on the pitch. The club later confirmed that Marinakis' outburst was solely driven by his concerns for Awoniyyi's well-being.
