Strike led by Cgil in Turin's square, sirens blaring in commemoration of the bombing of Gaza

In the heart of Turin, Italy, a powerful pro-Palestinian rally took place yesterday in Piazza San Carlo, with approximately 2,000 people in attendance. The rally, organised by the Confederation of Italian Labour (CGIL), was a significant part of a nationwide day of mobilization that saw strikes and rallies unfold in countless Italian squares.

The rally commenced with a poignant display, as sirens mimicking war and bombings on Gaza echoed through the square, serving as a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict. The CGIL representative, present at the rally, recalled the flotilla trying to reach Gaza with aid, and the union's unwavering support for the cause.

Former mayor of Turin, Chiara Appendino, was among the attendees, lending her voice to the rally. She chanted impassioned slogans such as "Stop this massacre", "Stop the genocide", and "Stop the violence". Her presence was a testament to the unified stand against the violence in Gaza.

The rally was also a show of solidarity with the Global Sumud Flotilla, a civilian-led maritime initiative launched in mid-2025. Led by a coalition of civil society groups, the flotilla aims to deliver aid to Gaza and raise awareness about the ongoing conflict. Hundreds of paper boats, adorned with the Palestinian flag colours and the words "I am also Global Sumud Flotilla", were placed on the pavement in support of this initiative.

A banner with the rainbow colours of peace read, "Even today people are dying in Gaza, peace in Palestine". The rally was a powerful expression of the desire for peace and an end to the violence in Gaza, and a call for humanitarian corridors and the suspension of all commercial and military cooperation with the Israeli government.

The rally in Piazza San Carlo was a significant part of a larger movement of women and men who shouted for respect for life, history, and identities, and against killing. The event underscored the global solidarity and unwavering commitment to the cause of peace and justice in Palestine.
