Stricken with Disappointment: Stevie Williams to Skip Tour de France and National Championships Due to Persistent Knee Trouble in 2025 Racing Season
Cycling sensation Stevie Williams shares his displacement from competing in two major events - the Tour de France and the British national championships in Wales - due to a persistent knee issue.
His woes started down under at the Tour Down Under in 2025, where he was diagnosed with a tricky-to-manage quadriceps tendinopathy, affecting his right knee. Despite kickstarting his season with a win at the Tour Down Under and capturing La Fleche Wallonne in 2024, the knee problem persisted.
Returning from treatment mid-season, he warned that he'd be lacking his usual form. Since then, the road hasn't been smooth. Struggling at Flèche Wallonne, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and Eschborn-Frankfurt, he had to momentarily pause his racing career.
Expressing his frustrations, Williams stated, "As a cyclist, the only thing you want is to race. But the knee problems have been incredibly frustrating. Yet, I know these things need time."
The 29-year-old's history of recovery is noteworthy. He had been forced to halt his WorldTour career for over a year in 2019 following a severe knee injury. Since his last race at Eschborn-Frankfurt on May 1, he's been working rigorously towards recovery, aiming to get back in the game soon.
However, this means sacrificing the national championships in Wales and the Tour de France in 2025, which he's deeply disheartened about, particularly concerning the nationals in his hometown, Aberystwyth. Assuring his fans, he emphasized continued hard work and hopes to be back on the start line as soon as possible.
