Los Angeles Chargers Bolster Defense Ahead of Crucial Week 3 Showdown

The Los Angeles Chargers are fortifying their defensive line in the aftermath of an injury to star linebacker Khalil Mack and the offseason exit of Joey Bosa.

In a move aimed at addressing the void left by Mack's absence, the team has signed defensive end Clelin Ferrell to their practice squad. Ferrell, who was the Raiders' fourth overall pick in 2019, demonstrated promise last year with the Washington Commanders, starting 10 games and tallying 3.5 sacks.

Rashad Weaver, a 27-year-old defensive end who was a 2021 fourth-round pick out of Pittsburgh, has also been added to the practice squad. Weaver, who has 5.5 sacks and 49 tackles across four NFL seasons with stints at Houston, the Los Angeles Rams, and the New York Jets, will also join the defensive line.

Tom Pelissero reported that the signings of Weaver and Ferrell were per NFL Network's information.

Mack, who has been a cornerstone for the Chargers, recording 31 sacks since joining the team in 2022, sustained an injury during their game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday. The injury was a dislocated elbow that occurred during a first-quarter tackle, and as a result, Mack was placed on injured reserve, which means he will be out for at least four weeks.

The Chargers' defense is anticipated to face a significant challenge due to Mack's absence, as they are already adjusting to the offseason exit of Joey Bosa. The team has started the season strongly with a 2-0 record, but the upcoming matchup against the Denver Broncos in Week 3 is a pivotal one.

This move to reinforce the defensive front following Mack's injury underscores the Chargers' resolve to maintain their momentum. The Week 7 clash with the Indianapolis Colts is the earliest Mack can return if he recovers swiftly.

The Los Angeles Chargers have made these signings to ensure they can continue to compete at a high level despite the injuries and exits. The addition of Weaver and Ferrell will bring experience and versatility to the defensive line, and the team is hopeful that they can help fill the void left by Mack and Bosa.
