Strengthening road safety demands voiced by activists following a fatal accident involving two pedestrians

In a tragic incident that has shaken the community, a collision between a pickup truck and two pedestrians on Kenaston Boulevard has claimed the lives of two individuals. The incident occurred on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Kenaston Boulevard and Enterprise Drive.

A 31-year-old man lost his life at the scene, while a 25-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries in the hospital. The identities of the victims and the driver have not been disclosed, and no further details about the crash have been released. The driver was later charged with several offenses, including impaired driving causing death.

The crash has prompted calls for change from active transportation advocates, with Mark Cohoe, from Bike Winnipeg, expressing his concerns. Cohoe stated that the lack of funding is holding back the completion of the city's pedestrian and cycling strategy. He believes that the current level of funding is not building a network of safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

The collision occurred on a section of Kenaston Boulevard where cyclists are forced to use the shoulder of the road, which is a busy 80 km/h artery. Cohoe, who would have used the bike path on the shoulder if he were travelling on that road, stated that the city has a pedestrian and cycling strategy, but it is not being fully funded.

The driver of the pickup truck allegedly fled the scene but was later apprehended. The charges against the driver have not been proven in court.

In response to the tragedy, a vigil has been planned by the victims' family for Thursday night. The vigil is to mourn the loved ones lost in the crash and to recognize the loss felt by all due to the tragedy. Mark Cohoe plans to attend the vigil to acknowledge the grave loss.

Rachel Lagacé from our website contributed to this report. News has reached out to the City of Winnipeg for comment, but is awaiting a response. The City of Winnipeg is responsible for the financing of the bicycle and pedestrian strategy.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this tragic incident, calls for change in Winnipeg's cycling and pedestrian strategy continue to grow. The vigil serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures for pedestrians and cyclists, and the need for a fully funded strategy to ensure a network of safety for all users of active transportation.
