Mexico and Canada Strengthen Partnership with Upcoming Leaders' Meeting

Mexico City is set to host a significant zoom meeting between President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, on Thursday. The purpose of Carney's visit is to deepen the Canada-Mexico partnership and reinforce North American prosperity.

This meeting follows their talks at the G7 Summit in Canada in June. During her visit to Canada, President Sheinbaum promoted investment opportunities in Mexico to a group of prominent Canadian business leaders.

The agenda for the upcoming meeting includes discussions on security, infrastructure, investment, energy, and trade. Canadian companies, including major ones like BMW, have shown investment interest in Mexico, particularly in the automotive sector. BMW is investing about 860 million USD in expanding its Mexican plant for electric vehicles in San Luis Potosí.

The USMCA free trade pact is significant for Mexico-Canada trade. In 2024, Canada was Mexico's fifth-largest merchandise trading partner, with nearly CAD $56 billion in two-way merchandise trade last year. Mexico is currently Canada's third-largest single-country merchandise trading partner.

The meeting will further strengthen the relationship between the two countries, according to the prime minister's office. The Canadian government is diversifying and strengthening its trade relationships with reliable partners, as highlighted by this visit.

It's important to note that the U.S. government has recently slapped new tariffs on goods from both Mexico and Canada. This context adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing trade discussions between the three North American countries.

Looking ahead, Canada and Mexico will co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, alongside the United States, from June 11 to July 19, 2026. This joint venture underscores the strong ties between these two nations.

President Donald Trump has indicated that he wants to "renegotiate" the USMCA, not just review it. The exact implications of this statement remain to be seen, but the meeting between Sheinbaum and Carney is expected to provide valuable insights into the future of Canada-Mexico trade relations.

Sheinbaum stated that trade would be a key focus of her discussions with Carney. She also mentioned that Canadian investment in Mexico would be a subject of discussion. The meeting at the National Palace in Mexico City is set to be a full day event, providing ample time for these important discussions.

This visit marks an exciting chapter in the 80-year history of diplomatic relations between Canada and Mexico, which were first established in 1944. As both countries continue to invest in each other's economies, the future of the Canada-Mexico partnership looks promising.
