Empowering Europe: A Call from the Saarland Parliament
Strengthening Europe is Imperative, Urges Saar Parliament - Strengthening Europe is Crucial, Says Saarland Parliament
Let's take a stand for a stronger Europe in these trying times, advocates the Saarland Parliament. Bold moves towards increased European unity and solidarity are needed now more than ever, as proposed by a joint resolution from the ruling SPD and the opposition CDU.
This resolution echoes the visionary words of the former French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, who proposed the creation of a European Coal and Steel Community on May 9, 1950 – a bold step that ultimately paved the way for the European Union as we know it today.
Europe needs to become resilient in the face of various crises, including the Russian aggression against Ukraine, global economic competitions, the US trade conflict, deepening transatlantic estrangement, and the looming climate crisis. In order to tackle these challenges head-on, we must come together as one.
Europe must aim for "more independence" in crucial sectors, particularly in the realm of key technologies. The transition to green steel can only be successful with strong European support.
Europe needs to be "strategically strengthened" to ensure its security, energy supply, technological sovereignty, and industrial value creation. The recent Russian attack on Ukraine is, in essence, an attack on the European order of peace, democracy, and our shared values.
The implementation of the Common European Asylum System, effective from June 2024, should be carried out promptly and responsibly. By mid-2026, all EU states should have implemented the new asylum regulations, aimed at creating a fairer distribution of asylum seekers across the EU. Enhanced cooperation between the security authorities in the Schengen area and in the fight against cross-border crime is of utmost importance.

In recent times, the European Union faces challenges such as Euroscepticism, sparked by economic disparities and political tensions[1]. Parties like the Alternative for Germany (AfD) have moved towards more Eurosceptic positions, advocating for reform or even withdrawal from the EU.
Ongoing efforts within the EU aim to strengthen its institutions and policies, addressing internal issues like democratic processes and economic inequalities[2]. However, balancing these efforts with national interests can prove challenging, especially for traditional pro-EU parties like the SPD and CDU in Germany.
The EU's stance on Ukraine often involves diplomatic efforts, economic aid, and military assistance, playing a significant role in ensuring Ukraine's stability and security.
