Thailand has taken strides to bolster security along the shared border with Cambodia following recent border disputes. The Foreign and Defence Ministries, along with the Royal Thai Army, have jointly announced enhanced border measures to protect the sovereignty of Thailand and ensure the safety of border communities.

Nikorndej Balankura, the director-general of the Foreign Ministry's Department of Information, emphasized that these measures are crucial for safeguarding the nation and preserving its sovereignty in line with international law and established global practices.

Since the skirmish between Thai and Cambodian troops in the Chong Bok area of Ubon Ratchathani on May 28, Thailand has exercised restraint, seeking a peaceful resolution and urging Cambodia to reduce tensions in the area. In light of Cambodia's refusal to adhere to the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for peaceful negotiations and their continued reinforcement of military presence at the border, these measures have become necessary.

In accordance with the National Security Council (NSC) meeting resolution on June 6, the 1st and 2nd Army Regions, along with the border command of Chanthaburi and Trat, have been granted authority to determine appropriate measures, criteria, procedures, and timelines necessary for crossings at all border points along the Thai-Cambodian frontier. The strictness of these measures corresponds to the severity of the situation and Cambodia's cooperation in resolving the issue.

Thailand's primary objective is to ensure the safety of both Thai and Cambodian citizens in the border regions. To this end, various border control measures have been implemented, including limiting crossings to essential activities, adjusting operating hours, closing specific checkpoints, enforcing martial law, and temporarily suspending tourism at permanent border checkpoints.

Evacuation drills have also been conducted in seven border provinces to prepare for potential emergencies and maintain the safety of border residents. Japan and the United States have expressed support for Thailand's efforts to maintain peace and control the situation.

The Foreign Ministry reaffirms its readiness to employ bilateral mechanisms and existing bilateral mechanisms to achieve a peaceful resolution founded on mutual respect and sincerity. The goal is to restore calm along the Thai-Cambodian border for the benefit of both nations' citizens.
