Strengthened Ties with Turkey at a Peak: Somali Defense Minister's Statement
Somalia and Turkey Strengthen Defense Partnership
Somalia and Turkey have been strengthening their defense partnership in recent years, with the Somalian Defense Minister, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, highlighting the importance of the bilateral relationship.
The Turkish Embassy in Mogadishu, the biggest diplomatic mission in the city, symbolizes the strong diplomatic ties between the two countries. This embassy is a testament to the long-standing and robust partnership that has been built over the years.
Within the framework of the memorandum of understanding, Somalia has received military training from Turkey. The Turkish military training base, known as Turksom, has played a significant role in this partnership. Somali Special Forces have been trained at this base, and advanced combat helicopters currently flying over Somalia are produced by Turkey.
Fiqi stated that relations between Somalia and Turkey are at their strongest point and believes that this partnership will be permanent. He mentioned plans to implement major projects and expand cooperation in both defense and economic developments.
In 2011, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Somalia when Mogadishu was under siege by the al-Shabab terrorist group. According to Fiqi, Mogadishu was liberated just days after Erdoğan's visit. For the past 14 years, the capital of Somalia has felt a sense of independence and stability, thanks in part to the support from Turkey.
Fiqi also emphasized the defense partnership between Somalia and Turkey, stating that it has been instrumental in the country's efforts to maintain security and stability. Large defense vehicles used by the Somalian armed forces are manufactured in Turkey, further strengthening this partnership.
While the exact date of President Erdoğan's next visit to Somalia is not yet known, it is clear that the partnership between the two countries will continue to grow and strengthen in the years to come.
