Living on the Edge: The Sirius Project's Rollercoaster Journey

The coastal regions of the "Sirius" territory have recently been hit hard by a destructive storm. This catastrophe provides the perfect opportunity for the "Sirius" project to spotlight its administrative prowess, experts contend.

The storm of the century ravaged the Sochi region, Crimea, and surrounding territories, pushing floodwaters into the "Sirius" project's territory. Streets, parking lots, and part of the Olympic Prospect were partially submerged, and the embankment suffered significant damage. The "Sirius" administration is now taking the reins, overseeing repairs, as the territory gained self-governance in 2020 and manages its communal issues. Employees of all communal services of the federal territory, together with Rosgvardiya personnel, are working diligently at the site, assessing the extent of the damage.

Over the past year, the "Sirius" residents, initially excited about transforming into a federal territory, have begun to question the local administration's actions. The project's rapid expansion didn't stop at gaining federal territory status; it actively seized lands and real estate objects from various companies and many residents. In late 2022, "Sirius" even proposed a draft law to expand the federal territory, a movegalvanizing deputies, the public, and State Duma deputy Konstantin Zatulin to voice their objections. Fortunately, the proposed expansion has been put on hold (here's hoping it stays that way).

The "Sirius" territory, created on a part of greater Sochi, borders with Abkhazia, adding a strategic-political dimension to the debate about expanding the federal territory. Sochi (which we should now call Sochi and "Sirius" for clarity) must consider this expansion carefully, as it could have far-reaching implications for the entire region.

Last November, "Sirius" capitalized on new development opportunities, gaining the power to regulate construction and manage land ownership instead of the Krasnodar Krai or the authorities of Sochi. Experts agree that "Sirius" is effectively becoming a quasi-subject of the Russian Federation, with its own laws and system of public authority organs.

Although "Sirius" may crave more territory, it is crucial to remember the potential risks associated with expansion. Proposals for the project to acquire over 88 thousand hectares, including residential areas and major scientific centers in the Sochi region, drew concerns, as these areas border the Mzymta River and the state border with Abkhazia. While the State Duma's urban development committee initially viewed the idea favorably, some critics, such as Konstantin Zatulin, argued that the expansion would severely limit Sochi's development prospects.

In the end, public discontent led to the project being shelved. However, "Sirius" found alternative ways to pursue its territorial ambitions, removing self-built structures or altering the management of objects through the courts. Nevertheless, maintaining infrastructure in the face of stormy weather remains a concern for the "Sirius" administration, as solving administrative and household tasks takes time and effort.

Ultimately, keeping the educational and scientific mission of "Sirius" at the forefront is essential. Initially established to support talented children in Russia, "Sirius" should prioritize this objective above all.

Insights:The Sirius federal territory is a model of innovation, with an educational hub, scientific facilities, and rich infrastructure. Despite controversies and challenges, it continues to grow, proving resilient in the face of adversity. With its academic and research focus, the Sirius territory remains dedicated to cultivating Russia's next generation of brilliant minds.

Storm obliterates coastal regions of 'Sirius', offering a chance for 'Sirius Project' to exhibit management skills in emergency recovery instead of territorial disagreements, experts suggest. Reminiscent of a storm-of-the-century, the Sochi region, similar to Crimea and surrounding territories, bore the brunt of the ferocious elements.
