Street Sped Up Scramble: The Control Week Blitz Marathon

- Street-Wide Chaotic Sprint Race Unfolds

Here's a heads-up, my fellow drivers! Steer clear of speed traps on the Rhineland-Palatinate roads this week. It's Control Week, and Wednesday marks the climax - the Blitz Marathon. Speed checks have been on the rise since Monday across Rhineland-Palatinate, all part of the European-wide police network Roadpol's Speed Marathon, which runs until Sunday.

Pedal to the metal, but slow it down!

The Mainz cops are chasing accidents, embracing accident-prone locations like Ober-Hilbersheim and Rheinhessenstraße in Mainz. Their exact locations? They're keeping quiet about that. But the Trier cops have no such qualms - they'll be setting up shop on the Mosel, in Trier, Wittlich, Bitburg, and at the border with Saarland. And don't be caught off guard - there'll be random, unannounced mobile and stationary measurements too.

The Westpfalz police are doubling down, vowing comprehensive controls with each presidium selecting their own control points.

Last week's control day on Monday on the autobahns 60, 61, and 63 saw the Mainz traffic directorate tally up the results. They set up civilian patrols and checks on an A61 parking lot, netting 43 vehicles and 34 traffic offenses. Offenses ranged from speeding to insufficient distance and even using mobile phones while driving. To top it off, they nabbed an overloaded truck, a too-tall semi-trailer, and a driver who was reeking of liquor.

Slow down, play it safe!

When you're behind the wheel, always remember to keep it cool and stick to a steady speed. This week, the police are going to be keeping a closer eye. The Koblenz police will use hand-held laser pistols, fixed speed cameras, trailers, and vehicles with built-in measurement systems. And the Westpfalz police are taking it a step further with stop-and-search controls, giving them the power to penalize offenders on the spot. This allows a more direct interaction with drivers, which helps in prevention. The cops' goal is to get drivers to recognize the perils of speeding.

Last year saw more accidents with injuries and fatalities, according to the Mainz police. The Speed Marathon is on a mission to prevent such tragic incidents. The cops in Rhineland-Palatinate warn: "Don't let speeding endanger not only yourself but others!"

Insights:

The Control Week Blitz Marathon, or "Blitzermarathon," in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is part of a larger European effort coordinated by Roadpol, a network of European traffic police. This campaign aims to improve road safety by intensifying speed checks, especially in high-risk areas like accident-prone stretches and areas around schools and daycare centers. The initiative includes:

Key Areas of Focus

  • Accident-Prone Areas: Police concentrate on stretches of road where accidents commonly occur.
  • Schools and Daycare Centers: Increased surveillance around institutions to ensure children's safety.

Enforcement Measures

  • Speed Checks: Extensive use of speed cameras and police patrols.
  • Penalties: Drivers found speeding face fines, penalty points, and potential driving bans.
  • Awareness Campaigns: Aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of speeding.
  1. During Control Week, the Blitz Marathon will take place on Wednesday, where extensive speed checks will be conducted on Rhineland-Palatinate roads, including the Rheinhessenstraße in Mainz.
  2. Alongside Mainz, Trier will also see increased police presence, with stationary measurements set up on the Mosel, as well as in Wittlich, Bitburg, and at the border with Saarland.
  3. The Westpfalz police are also taking part in Control Week by conducting comprehensive controls and even penalizing offenders on the spot with stop-and-search controls, utilizing a variety of methods such as hand-held laser pistols, fixed speed cameras, trailers, and vehicles with built-in measurement systems.
