Monopoly Celebrates 90 Years with a Giant Top Hat Hunt in London

In a unique celebration of Monopoly's 90th anniversary, a human-sized Monopoly board came to life in the streets of London. The centrepiece of this grand event was a two-metre tall, silver top hat, created by the costume designers for The Masked Singer, Plunge.

The giant top hat, which weighed more than 16 kilograms, was spotted around popular tourist hotspots such as Leicester Square and Piccadilly. This super-sized version of the Monopoly game piece was not just a spectacle for the eyes, but also a part of an exciting coin hunt.

The Ultimate UK Monopoly coin hunt was a collaboration between the Royal Mint and Hasbro, the games and toy company behind the beloved board game. The hunt had two components: a physical hunt for the giant top hat and a digital treasure hunt.

In the physical hunt, hopeful players had to photograph the moving top hat and share a picture on social media platforms using the hashtag #MONOPOLY50p. The digital treasure hunt, on the other hand, did not require participants to photograph the moving top hat or use a specific hashtag. Instead, winners of the digital hunt received 90 freshly minted coins, plus nine silver editions and one gold coin.

Rebecca Morgan, director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, stated that coin enthusiasts treasure each unique addition to their collection. Marianne James, senior vice president, global licensing at Hasbro, added that the Ultimate UK Monopoly coin hunt was a perfect way to honor the game's ongoing legacy and inspire the next generation of players and collectors.

The coins, which are available in a range of finishes, start from £15. They were created in collaboration with Hasbro to celebrate 90 years of Monopoly. The Royal Mint is offering 100 of these commemorative Monopoly 50p coins.

The digital treasure hunt was simultaneous with the physical hunt for the giant top hat. While the digital hunt rewarded winners with Monopoly coins, the physical hunt did not have any immediate rewards besides the joy of spotting the giant top hat.

The hat was created by the artist Laurence Vallieres, who is known for his intricate and detailed designs. The Mint is proud to celebrate 90 years of Monopoly with these commemorative coins. Whether you're a coin collector, a Monopoly fan, or just someone who appreciates a good spectacle, the Ultimate UK Monopoly coin hunt was an event not to be missed.
