Street named after beloved Knicks player Anthony Mason, situated near his childhood residence
In a heartwarming ceremony on Saturday, the street at the corner of Rockaway Boulevard and 147th Street in South Jamaica was renamed "Anthony Mason Way". The renaming honours the late NBA star, Anthony Mason Sr., who won a PSAL title with Springfield Gardens.
The street sign, green with white lettering, was unveiled during the ceremony. Anthony Mason Jr., who initiated the idea, pulled the string to reveal the new sign. The event was attended by Mason Jr., his four children, other family members, politicians, community members, and former teammate John Starks.
Mason Jr.'s father, a former Knicks forward, died at the age of 48 from complications of severe heart problems in February of last year. His 92-year-old mother, Mary, was present at the ceremony.
John Starks, speaking after the ceremony, mentioned that Queens "meant everything" to Mason Sr. and that he would be proud of the community's show of love. Mason Jr. expressed his admiration for his father, stating, "I look up to him not only as his kid, but as a role model."
Mason Jr. believes his father is a big role model for the community. He was always present at every game and practice, and he frequented the local barber shop that many people in the community went to.
In honour of his dad, Mason Jr. founded the nonprofit "Family on Three" to teach kids how to excel. He also initiated the court naming in honour of his father last year.
State senator Leroy Comrie and councilman Ruben Wills, among other politicians, helped make Mason Jr.'s street idea happen following a petition. Wills, the primary sponsor of the co-naming, mentioned that Mason Sr. was not "afraid, as most celebrities are, of people coming up and speaking to you."
The street sign is located between Rockaway Boulevard and 123rd Avenue. All of Mason's children spoke at the ceremony, from Anthony Jr. to Antoine, Aryana, and Armon, who had "Lil Mase" and his dad's No. 14 shaved into their hair.
The search results do not provide information about who conceived the idea for the street name "Anthony Mason Way" in South Jamaica. Despite this, the ceremony was a testament to the enduring legacy of Anthony Mason Sr. in the community he loved.
