Smutty Vandals Ruin Banksy's Heartwarming Marseille Masterpiece

Street artist Banksy's latest creation briefly vandalized, playfully spoiled in France

In the notorious city of Marseille, the latest addition to its bustling street art scene received an unsavory twist—someone decided to give Banksy's touching artwork a crude makeover. The elusive UK street artist's newest piece, a poignant lighthouse, was marred with an unwelcome phallic alteration. But fear not, Marseille's unapologetic spirit quickly came to the rescue!

A Shining Beacon of Hope... Kinda

The artwork, which is situated on Rue Félix Frégier, features a lighthouse subtly cast by the shadow of a bollard, with the words "I want to be what you saw in me" artistically inscribed nearby. This marks a heartfelt departure from Banksy's usual sharp-witted commentary on consumerism and war.

Though largely appreciated by the smart geoguessers on social media, who pinpointed its location, the piece didn't escape vandalism entirely. In what is hardly a stellar display of originality, some enterprising rugrats decided to transform the lighthouse into a caricature of male anatomy complete with a pair of testicles. How quaint.

Less Than Marvelous Makeover

Banksy has always encouraged the reinterpretation and hijacking of his works, but it's safe to say this wasn't exactly the patina he had in mind. Nonetheless, the offending phallic alteration was swiftly removed, and the lighthouse was restored in less than a day.

Agnès Perrone, a heritage decor painter, shared her thoughts with AFP, stating she made a valiant effort to clean up the tags the night before, adding, "They waited until I went to bed, even very late, to come and add a nice pair of bollocks around the lighthouse." She found the whole ordeal rather stupid, but what can you expect from Marseilles' residents? It is, after all, their national sport to tag every available surface.

A Subject of Online Fascination

Since the vandalized work gained popularity online, fans have been flocking to the tunnel near the Catalans beach to catch a glimpse of the more intimate Banksy statement. Despite the phallic flaws, the artwork has received widespread admiration and analysis, with many highlighting its poetic narrative and emotional depth.
