Canal+ Group and Disney+ Secure Exclusive Broadcast Rights for Major UEFA Tournaments
The world of European football is set for an exciting few seasons as major changes to the broadcast rights for some of the continent's most prestigious competitions have been announced.
In a significant move, Canal+ Group has acquired the exclusive broadcast rights to the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Youth League, and UEFA Super Cup matches for the 2024/25, 2025/26, and 2026/27 seasons in Poland. This means that Polish fans will be able to watch these highly anticipated matches on their screens, with the UEFA Super Cup set to kick off the new deal as the first event.
Meanwhile, Disney+ has secured the rights to stream the UEFA Women's Champions League across Europe from the next season, through to 2029/30. This deal will make the tournament accessible to viewers throughout Europe as part of the standard subscription, with the first matches available starting from the next season. The live stream will start at 12:00 CET on 7 October.
The UEFA Women's Champions League will be available for free-to-air broadcast in 24 territories, managed by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) over the next five years. The EBU has also acquired free-to-air media rights for the UEFA Women's Champions League over the same period, spanning 24 territories on behalf of 26 EBU Members.
The restructured format of the UEFA Women's Champions League will see all 18 teams in the League Phase playing six matches each against a different opponent. Nine clubs have already qualified for the League Phase, including Arsenal, OL Lyonnais, Paris, Bayern München, Wolfsburg, Barcelona, Chelsea, Benfica, and Juventus. The remaining nine spots will be filled by teams progressing from the third qualifying round, and these teams will be joined by the four highest-ranked teams holding home advantage, who will advance directly to the quarterfinals.
Teams placed fifth to twelfth will compete in two-legged Knockout Phase Play-offs for the remaining quarter-final positions. The League Phase draw will take place live on Disney+ on 19 September, giving fans the opportunity to see which teams will face off in the early stages of the competition.
The new rights deals for both the UEFA Women's Champions League and the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Youth League, and UEFA Super Cup extend through to the 2029/30 season. This means that fans across Europe will be able to enjoy these exciting tournaments for the next few seasons, with the comfort of knowing that they can watch all the action on their screens.
In addition to the UEFA competitions, the EBU members offering free-to-air coverage of the UEFA Women's Champions League 2025/26 include BBC (UK), ARD and ZDF (Germany), RAI (Italy), France Télévisions (France), and RTVE (Spain). This means that football fans in these countries will be able to watch the tournament for free, making it accessible to a wider audience.
Overall, these new rights deals mark an exciting time for European football, with fans across the continent set to enjoy some of the best action from the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Youth League, UEFA Super Cup, and UEFA Women's Champions League over the next few seasons.
