Streamer Jean Pormanove's reported demise under suspicion of being a staged event, according to the lawyer of one of the involved influencers.
The French authorities are currently investigating the death of Jean Pormanove, a well-known streamer who passed away during a live stream on the Australian platform Kick.com. The investigation is focused on determining the exact cause of his death and assessing the role of the platform in the circumstances leading up to it.
Autopsy results have shown that Pormanove's death was not caused by trauma or injury inflicted by others, nor were there any signs of burns. Authorities are now exploring medical and toxicological causes as probable reasons for his death.
Pormanove, also known as JP, was known for his controversial streaming style, where he staged himself to appear as if he was being hit or humiliated. His last livestream reportedly lasted for 12 days, during which he was subjected to mistreatment, including physical assaults and sleep deprivation by other streamers. On his final stream, viewers noticed he became immobile, and he was later pronounced dead while the stream was still active.
The case has sparked outrage and calls for accountability, particularly towards Kick for allegedly failing to moderate dangerous content. The French government has announced its intention to take legal action against the platform for negligence under French law and the EU Digital Services Act. The authorities and digital regulators are investigating whether Kick knowingly broadcast content involving deliberate attacks on personal integrity and whether it complied with required content moderation standards.
The Arcom (Assurance des jeux en ligne), the French online gaming watchdog, has also contacted several European counterparts to investigate Kick.com. However, no further details about the platform have been provided in the context of this article.
It is important to note that while the precise medical cause of Pormanove's death remains undetermined publicly, the ongoing probe includes examination of platform liability and content regulation failures alongside the forensic investigation into his death itself. Kada Sadouni, the French Minister of the Interior, has stated that the presumption of innocence must prevail for Pormanove, as investigations are ongoing.
Raphaël Graven was the real name of the deceased streamer. His death has already led to condemnation, despite no formal implication by justice. The investigation into his death and the actions of the platform he was streaming on continues, with the hope that it will provide answers and lead to necessary changes in the online streaming industry.
