Cracking the Opening Batsman Dilemma in Post-Rohit India
Strategies for selecting a new opening batsman for India during the upcoming England Test series following Rohit's unavailability.
Rohit Sharma's sudden retirement from Test cricket has thrown a spanner in the works for Team India. The upcoming England series looms, and they need a capable replacement at the top of the order. With various options to choose from, let's take a closer look at who could potentially step up to the plate.
The five-Test series against England commences on June 20, shortly after the culmination of IPL 2025. With Rohit gone, the think-tank faces two critical questions: who replaces him as the captain, and who replaces him as the opener? While both questions may have intertwined answers, we'll focus primarily on the batting void left by Rohit.
Two possible replacements are right at India's fingertips - the versatile KL Rahul and the budding Shubman Gill. Rahul and Gill, apart from Yashasvi Jaiswal, have been the primary choices for opening batsmen for India in Tests since 2023. Other potential candidates, such as Cheteshwar Pujara and Mayank Agarwal, seem unlikely contenders given their extended absence from the national setup.
KL Rahul or Shubman Gill?
Rahul's testament to flexibility lies in his playing majority of his Tests (48 out of 58) as an opener, having shifted to the middle order more recently. His adaptability was on display during the Australi series last year, where he returned to opening despite Rohit's comeback, leaving a lasting impression on the selectors. While his form could not maintain the high bar set during the early part of the series, his skill and adaptability may still earn him a spot at the top. Additionally, Rahul boasts an impressive record as an opener in England, with 597 runs in eight Tests at an average of 37.31, surpassed only by Sunil Gavaskar[1].
In contrast, Gill, who is now established at No.3, started his Test career as an opener. His move to the middle order has yielded 16 Tests with an average of 37.38. However, his performance as an opener is less impressive, with an average of 32.37 and a dismal 14.66 in England[1]. Given his preference for the No.3 spot, it seems unlikely that he will be shifted up the order, which tips the scales in favor of Rahul.
Is Sai Sudharsan a Dark Horse?
India also has the option of taking a chance on the uncapped Sai Sudharsan as Rohit's replacement. Sudharsan's reputation has grown in recent years, with strong performances across various formats. He had a stunning IPL season, batting with a strike rate above 150[5]. County cricket stints for Surrey and India A performances also indicate that he is capable of handling the challenges of Test cricket.
These factors, coupled with his expected inclusion in the Test squad, raise the possibility of Sudharsan getting a chance to prove his mettle[5]. Nonetheless, if Gill continues in his preferred No.3 spot and Abhimanyu Easwaran is considered a backup, the choice will essentially come down to Rahul and Sudharsan[1].
How Does India's Bowling Attack Come into Play?
The selection of the opening batsman may also depend on India's bowling strategy. If the team sticks to their all-rounder-heavy approach with Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, and two of Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, and Shardul Thakur, Rahul would fit right back into the opening slot, leaving Sudharsan waiting in the wings[2]. Alternatively, if India decides to pick only one of the all-rounders, opening with Sudharsan and slotting Rahul in the middle-order at six could be an option[2].
Intriguingly, if Gill is named captain, it could open a door for Sudharsan, as they have often opened together for the Gujarat Titans[3]. Overall, Team India will enter a new era without Rohit Sharma, who had been one of the best Test openers in recent times[3].
Predicted India's batting lineup for the first England Test: Sai Sudharsan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul (middle-order if India opts for one all-rounder at eight), Ravindra Jadeja.

- KL Rahul's exceptional record as an opener in England, along with his adaptability and flexibility in various disposal formats, make him a likely candidate to fill Rohit Sharma's vacant opening spot for the upcoming England series.
- Shubman Gill's lower average as an opener in England compared to KL Rahul, coupled with his preference for the No.3 spot, suggests that he may not be the primary choice for the opening position in the upcoming series.
- If India decides to take a chance on the uncapped Sai Sudharsan as Rohit Sharma's replacement, his performance in IPL, county cricket, and India A may earn him a spot in the Test team, making him a dark horse for the opening batsman position.
