Strategies for Exterminating Will-o-the-Wisps in Oblivion Remastered

Will-o-the-Wisps: A Pesky Problem in Oblivion!

In the enchanting world of Oblivion, these glowing, ghostly creatures known as Will-o-the-Wisps can give any adventurer a run for their money. These supernatural pests won't go down easily, and they've got a knack for chasing you without stopping. If you're not careful, they'll drain your health and magic faster than you can say "surrender!"

You'll likely encounter these pesky wisps in monster dungeons or around Azura's Shrine after starting the Blood of the Daedra quest and outside the Swampy Cave after starting the Fighters Guild's Mystery at Harlun's Watch quest. It's best to give them a wide berth, but if you happen to cross paths, here's how to tackle them.

Disclaimer

Although changes in Oblivion Remastered are aplenty, the approach to dealing with Will-o-the-Wisps remains the same, so this guide applies to both the remastered and original versions of the game.

Mastering the Will-o-the-Wisps

You might be tempted to charge in with your iron sword or steel mace to take down these wispy foes, but don't be fooled; they're damn near immune to physical attacks. Instead, you'll need to find their weak spots if you want to finally put an end to their ceaseless pursuit.

Crafty Weapons and Magic

First things first, it pays to pack silver or Daedric weapons and any enchanted gear you've got on hand. If you're up against these wisps with magic, you're in luck – they're particularly susceptible to offensive spells, especially fire-based ones. Bonus points for enchanted gear that reflects damage or magic. Keep in mind, though, that they can drain your magic supply if you get too close.

The Mage's Advantage

If you're a mage, you'll find yourself at a significant advantage when facing off against Will-o-the-Wisps. The stronger your magic, the easier it'll be to take them down. Just be careful not to let them steal your magic as you get too close.

The Melee Struggle

For melee characters, the struggle is real, and basic attacks with iron or steel weapons just won't do the trick. You'll need a silver weapon at the very least to have a hope of taking them down. A silver bow is an especially smart choice, as it'll allow you to keep your distance.

Steer clear of battling the wisps with your bare hands. They'll drain your health and magic if you let them get too close, and without a high hand-to-hand skill level (50 or above), you won't be able to hurt them with your fists. Prepare for a lengthy confrontation if you prefer fists over weapons.

Once you've slain one of these ghostly foes, you can loot it to get your hands on some valuable Glow Dust, a popular alchemy ingredient. This little gem is essential for making potions with chameleon, light, or fortify magic effects. Don't forget, you'll also need it to activate the Shrine of Azura.
