A thrilling story unfolds on Australia's coast as tourist Nash Core and his 11-year-old son bravely waded into the shallow waters near Ardrossan, South Australia, to assist a 10-foot great white shark caught in the sand banks. Three local men had been attempting to return the distressed marine creature to deeper waters for nearly an hour.

"It was either ill or just tired," explained Core, who was visiting from Gold Coast, Queensland, with his wife and sons. "We definitely got it into some deeper water, so hopefully it's swimming still." Initially, Core captured footage of the writhing shark using his drone before he and his son decided to aid the trio battling to move the shark into deeper water.

While approaching, some apprehension seized Core: "To be honest, I did have some thoughts about, oh, why am I going out here?" he recalled. His young son, Parker, shared his father's apprehension: "My heart's pounding," the 11-year-old confessed.

The three men had already used crab rakes, a garden rake-like tool for extracting small crabs from sand, to guide the shark into deeper waters when Core and his son arrived. Thinking safety first, Core chose not to push the shark further but instead allowed it to proceed into its territory. The rescuers later revealed that they'd never encountered a beached shark before.

Great white shark strandings are becoming increasingly visible on social media, albeit uncommonly occurring. Macquarie University wildlife scientist Vanessa Pirotta explains that sharks might strand for several reasons, such as illness, injury, or pursuing prey into the shallows. Animal safety should always take priority, and individuals should contact environmental authorities for professional help if they witness a stranded shark. In certain urgent instances, committed locals can assist by gently guiding the shark into deeper waters using appropriate tools.
