Owner Must Salvage Stranded Sailboat Off Cuxhaven - Stranded 30m sailing ship risks Elbe estuary shipping lane hazards

A 30-metre traditional sailing ship has been stranded on a stone breakwater in the outer Elbe estuary since Saturday afternoon. The vessel ran aground near Cuxhaven, leaving four sailors and a dog in need of rescue. Authorities have now ordered the owner to remove the ship by the end of the week.

The ship first reported trouble just after midnight on 3 February 2026. By the time officials confirmed the grounding on 4 February, it had already been stuck for around 12 hours. Early attempts to free the vessel revealed damage, including deformations and water leaking into the hull.

Salvage teams have tried to tow the ship free but have failed so far. The situation remains difficult due to strong easterly winds and unusually low water levels. Freezing temperatures also pose a risk, as ice could form on the ship, adding weight and making recovery harder.

Authorities have warned that shifting currents, wind, or ice might dislodge the vessel. If it breaks free, debris could drift into the Elbe's main shipping lane, creating hazards for other boats. Wave action may cause further damage to the already weakened structure.

The Elbe-Nordsee Waterways and Shipping Office has given the owner until the end of the week to salvage the ship. The stranded vessel continues to pose risks to navigation, with weather conditions complicating efforts. Rescue teams remain on standby as the situation develops.
