The relationship between the United States and Brazil is at a low point not seen in decades, with tensions escalating over recent U.S. sanctions and tariffs imposed on Brazil.

The turning point came in August 2025, when President Trump levied a 50% tariff on most Brazilian goods, including a designation of Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes for sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act. This move was largely motivated by the prosecution of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro for allegedly attempting to overturn the 2022 election results.

Trump's administration labelled Bolsonaro’s trial a politically motivated "witch hunt," pushing a narrative that the Brazilian justice system is undermining the rule of law. Bolsonaro’s charges include orchestrating a coup attempt, and the trial’s outcome may come soon.

Brazil’s current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva condemned the U.S. interference in Brazil’s judicial processes, calling the sanctions and tariffs unacceptable and asserting that Brazil will not be intimidated. Brazil has threatened retaliatory tariffs, and the U.S. stated it would match such trade measures.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, Jair Bolsonaro's third son, has been a central figure linking Brazil's far-right with Trump's MAGA movement. He has been successful in his efforts to punish Brazil’s justices, as evidenced by the recent suspension of Justice de Moraes from operating in the country for a month. Eduardo Bolsonaro has openly called for Magnitsky sanctions against de Moraes.

The Brazilian diplomatic delegation, led by Senator Nelsinho Trad, met with U.S. trade officials and nine U.S. senators, including Thom Tillis of North Carolina, in a last-ditch effort to defuse tensions. Trad believes Brazil's outreach may have helped soften the final terms of the tariffs.

Privately, diplomats feel the decisions were made inside the White House, within Trump's inner circle - a group they had no access to. Elon Musk clashed with Justice de Moraes over censorship on social media, leading to the suspension of the platform in Brazil.

The tariffs are set to take effect on Wednesday. Brazilian officials have emphasized that the judiciary is independent and the executive branch has no control over Supreme Court justices.

The escalating trade conflict risks serious economic disruption given Brazil's significant exports to the U.S. This situation is fostering further geopolitical shifts, with Brazil turning towards China and other partners amid deteriorating U.S. ties.
