Stormy weather ahead: Thunderstorms predicted for the weekend, replacing the previous heat

Germany experiences a temperature drop, yet it's accompanied by stormy weather. Despite this, it does not signify the end of summer.

Hot Weather and Increased Ozone Pollution Forecasted for Germany

Germany is set to experience warm to hot conditions in the coming days, with temperatures expected to reach 28–32 °C, and possible heatwaves, particularly in mid-August 2025. This weather pattern, dominated by persistent heat and sunshine under a strong high-pressure system, is conducive to increased ozone pollution levels.

Nights will be relatively mild, around 14–18 °C, with predominantly sunny skies and below-average rainfall (approximately 30–50 mm over several days), contributing to dry conditions. This weather forecast suggests that ozone levels are likely to rise, increasing pollution and potential health risks, particularly in urban and industrial areas of Germany.

The high temperatures (expected to be 30 °C or more), strong sunlight, limited wind and rain, and dry conditions are key factors influencing ozone pollution during this forecast period. These conditions accelerate ozone formation, provide the energy for photochemical reactions, reduce dispersion and cleansing of ozone precursors, and exacerbate pollution build-up, respectively.

The World Health Organization recommends a maximum 8-hour average of 100 micrograms for ozone gas, while the average daily peak values of the 271 measuring stations in Germany were 138 micrograms per square meter. However, it's worth noting that the ozone pollution in Germany is likely to decrease with the slight change in weather.

In the coming days, the weather is expected to undergo some changes. On Saturday, temperatures throughout Germany will drop to more comfortable levels, with a maximum of 20 to 25 degrees in the north and 25 to 30 degrees elsewhere. In the north and northwest, temperatures will be between 25 and 31 degrees.

In the south and southeast, there will be some clouds on Saturday, and DWD expects showers and individual severe thunderstorms. On Sunday, coastal temperatures will be "almost back to long-sleeved levels around 21 degrees." After the thunderstorms, it will gradually cool down. In some places in the north, it will be foggy again in the morning on Sunday. During the day on Sunday, it will clear up and remain mostly dry.

In the southwest, up to 32 degrees are possible on Saturday. The highest temperatures on Sunday will be between 23 degrees in the north and 29 degrees in the southwest. It's important to note that temperatures of more than 35 degrees are possible especially in the south and east of Germany.

According to Fabian Chow, the coming week will continue to be summery, with warm temperatures, but from the middle of the week, it will become more changeable, and more precipitation will join in. The sultry heat is gradually leaving Germany, but it will still be warm. More pleasant air is expected to flow into Germany on Friday.

In conclusion, while the hot, sunny, and mostly dry weather expected in Germany in the coming days will likely lead to elevated ozone pollution levels, changes in the weather are expected to help decrease ozone pollution levels. It's crucial for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions to take necessary precautions to protect their health during this period.
