The German Weather Service issued warnings of heavy rainfall and rapid snowmelt in several regions, spurring concerns about potential flooding and landslides.
Cities like Essen saw a heightened water level due to relentless rainfall, prompting the weather service to maintain a cautionary warning until the evening of Monday. Although no immediate threat to residents arose, cities like Minden in North Rhine-Westphalia bore the brunt of the high waters, closing several roads as a preventive measure.
The fire department in Minden advised against venturing into flooded areas of the Weser River due to swiftly-flowing water and an unpredictable current, even in the nearby bank area. Elsewhere, the Gesundbrunnen sluice in Berlin had to open its dams in an effort to release water and curb potential flooding issues.
Unpredictable Weather and Impacts in Hungary
In Hungary, cyclonic storms have long been a concern, particularly the Danube River's waters. The country's recent downpour saw the Danube's water levels forecast to surge by 50 centimeters by the evening of September 21, putting immense pressure on flood protection systems. The city of Budapest, in particular, has seen a rise of water along its lower quays, impacting metro and tram lines. The capital is braced for an 8.5-meter water level, even though emergency services have assured residents that the public water supply will not be affected.
Precautions in Serbia and Romania
Serbian authorities have implemented flood defense measures along the Danube River, with sections south of the Hungarian border remaining relatively unscathed. Meanwhile, Romania has experienced human casualties due to flooding, with over 20,000 people affected in 24 communities and six people tragically losing their lives.
Germany's Snow and Ice Warnings
In northern Germany, however, the focus has shifted to ice warnings and impending snowfall, with further slippery conditions on streets potentially arising.
