Holiday travelers in Berlin and Brandenburg might face setbacks this Christmas Eve due to ongoing issues with rail traffic. despite the stormy weather clearing up, residual effects continue to cause delays and irregularities. A fallen tree on the Berlin-Dresden line in Lower Lusatia has caused long-distance trains to be diverted, affecting travelers from other regions, especially those coming from the north and west.

As of Friday morning, ICE trains from Berlin, Leipzig, and Erfurt headed towards Frankfurt were affected, with delays and cancellations en route. These disruptions are a direct result of the storm-damaged infrastructure.

Meanwhile, DB is carrying out infrastructure upgrades at Berlin Hauptbahnhof from February 2025 to April 2025. This project involves installing new switches and signaling systems to improve train movements and reduce traffic congestion. During the main construction phase, only four out of eight tracks in the underground station will be operational.

There will be two complete closures of the Tiefbahnhof (underground station) throughout the construction period. Long-distance trains will then temporarily bypass Berlin Hauptbahnhof and Südkreuz, stopping at alternative stations instead.

Travelers planning trips from Berlin or Brandenburg on Saturday should remain vigilant and closely monitor weather updates to avoid any potential delays. Despite these challenges, it is essential to prioritize safety and plan accordingly to ensure a smooth journey.
