Storm Wutip causes destruction and claims lives in Central Vietnam, decimating crops and leaving behind a trail of damage.

Central Vietnam has been hit hard by Storm Wutip, which has left five people dead and two missing, according to disaster management authorities. The storm has also triggered severe flooding across tens of thousands of hectares of farmland, causing widespread disruption.

As of 6:00 pm on Saturday, three people had perished in Quang Tri and two in Quang Binh, with two more still unaccounted for in Quang Binh. Heavy rainfall and widespread flooding have inundated 70,643 hectares of rice fields and crops, with Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, and Quang Binh suffering the most extensive damage, followed by Ha Tinh.

With regards to the aquaculture sector, approximately 2,259 hectares of fish and shrimp farms have been impacted, with Quang Binh experiencing the brunt of the losses, followed by Quang Tri, Quang Nam, and Da Nang. Local authorities in Quang Binh have reported flooding on two sections of Provincial Road 562 at Km17, while roads such as National Highway 49C in Quang Tri remain submerged.

To help affected families and facilitate the search and rescue operations for the missing, local officials have been offering their condolences and working to mobilize emergency response teams to aid residents and resume agricultural production.

Weather conditions in the region remain unpredictable, with coastal provinces and cities from Quang Ninh to Quang Ngai, as well as Kon Tum and Gia Lai, urged to stay vigilant and enforce preventive measures. Authorities have also been instructing provinces to closely monitor fishing vessels, ensuring their safety and guiding them away from danger zones as necessary.

The toll of destruction from Storm Wutip serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of Vietnam's central regions to such weather events, especially in light of growing concerns about the effects of climate change on weather patterns.

Meteorologists have linked the storm's impact to shifting seasonal weather patterns and increasingly extreme climate conditions.
