Prepare Ahead: Storm Surges Likely in Weser and North Sea Regions

With relentless weather conditions ongoing, the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) in Hamburg is cautioning residents of potential storm surges in the Weser region and North Sea coast of Lower Saxony. The BSH advised on Sunday night that Bremen and Bremerhaven may experience a storm surge level of 1.5 meters above mean high water (MHW) on Monday afternoon. Elsfleth, Brake, and Rechtenfleth on the Weser are also expected to be affected, according to the BSH's forecast. Wilhelmshaven on the North Sea coast of Lower Saxony is under warning for a storm surge threshold reaching in the morning, the BSH mentioned.

The water levels are still high on various rivers and streams in Lower Saxony, with 45 gauges reaching the third of four warning levels by Monday night. The rivers Weser, Aller, Leine, and Oker, among others, all surpassed the threshold. At level three, flooding of properties, larger areas, roads, and cellars becomes possible.

The authorities had their hands full in Celle. Large areas along the Aller and Fuhse rivers were already flooded, as per the fire department's announcement on Monday morning. A retirement and nursing home in the city was initially protected from the flood with sandbags on Christmas Eve but had to be evacuated as a safety measure due to the worsening situation. The helpers continued filling sandbags and answering calls to flooded cellars throughout the night.

Rodenberg in Schaumburg district also had an acute warning on Christmas Eve, while the precarious situation continued in Sarstedt, Hildesheim district, and Hann. Münden, Göttingen district. Emergency services were active, and sandbags were used in attempts to control the massive waters. The German Weather Service (DWD) warned of severe weather conditions for the Harz region.

BSH Water Level Forecast:

Remember to keep an eye on the developing weather conditions and follow instructions from local authorities in Hamburg, as the storm surge threshold may be reached as early as Monday afternoon. The German Weather Service (DWD) also issued severe weather warnings for the Harz region, emphasizing the importance of constant vigilance and preparation during the ongoing storm surge warnings.

Note: Enrichment data regarding storm surge warnings or flood conditions is not provided in the input sources for Lower Saxony and the North Sea coast, including cities like Wilhelmshaven, Bremen, and Bremerhaven.
